Greenish mold & black/purple shrooms on BRF cake?
    #23519512 - 08/07/16 05:01 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I'm assuming this is some sort of mold, but I'm looking for more specific details as to what it is/how it happened. The fruits also seem to have turned black. The other eleven cakes in my chamber have pretty much finished fruiting already, this has been the slowest one.

The black and purple on the shrooms are spores mate.

Are you sure? This cake looked kind of sickly yesterday (the one right under the middle one with the giant fruit). The caps look kind of oily & wrinkled.

Also, what is the greenish/blue growth toward the bottom of the cake?

The green looks like trich that is sporulating.  They are definitely sick and not something I personally would eat.  Just was saying the purple shit on the caps are spores from leaving mushrooms to fruit for too long.  In the future, harvest each mushroom just after the veil breaks or if not a couple hours before it does.

Either way, I wouldn't eat em.

Those fruits needed picking 2 days ago and the green is trich. The whole thing needs to go into the trash.

:sorry:

Just that one cake, or is the whole grow doomed? This is the only cake that has any sort of mold on it - is it possible that it could spread to the others if it hasn't yet?

Also, how does trich typically infect the mushrooms? Is there anything I could have done to prevent this or is it just bad luck?

Thanks for the answers.

It's sporulating.    Your entire grow is now infected with trich.    Trich reproduces spores by the millions, and they tend to stick to anything they come in contact.  Everything anywhere near that cake is contaminated.

Ok, I'll trash everything. How do you prevent something like this from happening in the future?

Greatly increase the amount of fresh air you're giving them to keep molds at bay.  Molds tend to thrive in stagnant air environments.  Could have just been some bad luck this round, fully colonized cakes should be rather contaminant resistant as long as you have lots of FAE and aren't over misting.  Other than that, be sterile as possible when inoculating to prevent bacteria on substrates, which also increases the chance for molds.

Thanks for the advice. I have holes drilled in the fruiting chamber & try to keep the windows open at all times. How do I know if I'm overmisting? Should I use a hygrometer next time & make sure not to go over a certain level of humidity? I had a feeling that I was giving them too much water throughout the grow, but I have no real way to make sure.

Also, my fruits are drying in the same room, theres no way that the mold could affect them or make them unsafe to eat, correct? Might be a dumb question, just don't want to poison myself...

As long as you don't see anything growing on your fruits you're fine.  I'm not sure how trich would effect you if you ate it, you'd have to ask somebody else, but I'm assuming it'd make you sick.  Just make sure they are drying 100%, cracker dry, and you shouldn't have any issues.

Forget the hygrometer.  That only measures humidity and you don't really need it.  I can already tell your humidity is fine.  When you mist in the future, only do so when the surface is dry and only until it begins to bead up in the substrate, and try to prevent pooling water.  When pinning, you can also try the bottom water trick but only if your cakes are dry, by putting your cakes on a saucer of water so they can wick up the moisture for a few hours.  This will give your pins a huge boost.  Only do this when pinning or you'll risk water logging your cakes, as the pin will sop up that moisture and use it to grow.

Make sure you fan vigorously for about a minute every time you mist also.  This will get all that excess co2 out, and every time you do it, it's a fresh air exchange which the mushies love more than anything. (Besides water, when they need it).

Fresh air is in my opinion the single most important environmental factor when cultivating.

:wtfsonic:

Don't trash everything man! Just the cake with the mold! The others might be fine. Fully colonized substrates are very contam resistant, they might be fine. Hell pull them outta the garbage and give em a good rinse. Then put em back and only toss the ones that go green.

Yeah, I thought I was clear on that.  There are spores all over your grow, but I said

If the spores don't take hold, there is no worry.  They will fruit and the fruits will be edible.

Gods I hope you didn't trash them all, thought you were trashing the one!

I just meant that the trich was sporulating, and spores are all over the grow.  Guess I should have worded it differently  I also said that increasing FAE will keep that mold at bay, but I digress.

That quote is a little out of context. I love your enthusiasm but I think you need to be a little more cautious about what you tell people here. You have a lot to offer this community, but you've been giving a lot of advice and you're not quite an expert yet.

You're right.  It was my bad, and I admit the fault.  Hopefully the OP didn't crash the party on my behalf.

Apologies.

Yeah, I dumped everything...I even threw the perlite away because I figured that it was completely covered in mold spores & was useless...that's how I interpreted:

"It's sporulating.    Your entire grow is now infected with trich.    Trich reproduces spores by the millions, and they tend to stick to anything they come in contact.  Everything anywhere near that cake is contaminated."

Lol wow. Some people don't even clean their sgfcs after years of trich break outs lol. I got some chambers that have seen tons of trich I haven't cleaned since 2012. Is anything salvageable? Where is the cakes and perlite? Outside? I'd just bring it back in lol

In a trash bag at the gas station down the street from me.

Everything within the cake was hopelessly contaminated & needed to be disposed of immediately, apparently.
