Benefits of different substrate?

Hey guys, I've been trying to optimize my grows and I imagine substrate is a pretty large consideration. From what I've read, most people use rye grains. I was wondering why?
I've been using a mixture of rye flour, vermiculite, and water (PF TEK) and have had fantastic results. I currently do cakes in a SGFC but I want to try out some casing methods an go with a monotub style. PF TEK solidifies pretty easily and I imagine it is harder to work with when trying to case seeing as you'd have to crumble the cakes and that just doesn't seem optimal to me. Can you shake up rye grains in a jar to make them not solidify in order to case easier?
I've stayed away from rye grains mainly due to endospores, but maybe it's time to do some research on how to sterilize rye grain 100%?

Sterilize rye grain at 15 psi for 90 minutes and you'll be good to go

That kills even the endospores?

That's how it's done, and you don't have to use rye grain, there are dozens of other grains we use for spawn. I personally sterilize for 100 minutes, but 90-100 is the standard for jars.

I'm a big fan of bird seed myself. Cheap and easy to prep.

Hmm, okay, well that makes me a bit more comfortable using rye grain seeds. My other big question is does rye grain seeds solidify into a block like the PF Tek does? Can you shake the jars throughout the process to keep the grains separate without hurting the mycelium so that it is easier to spread and case?
Thanks for the advice.

Dude, the reason grain production has been the standard for most mushroom cultivation for 50+ years is because of the exact reason your asking, it breaks up into thousand of inoculation points. The PF tek you were using is kind of an alternative developed to be fruited as cakes, not for spawn although it does work.
