Poppies: climate and other questions

Hello friends. I have some rather specific questions on poppies that perhaps some more seasoned posters can help with.
I acquired some Persian White and Tasmanian seeds and I was wondering what sort of maintenance would be needed in order to have them succeed in my climate.
I live in the Western US, climate zone 5, elevation ~8000ft with abundant sunshine. Precipitation-wise it is somewhat arid, with about 18 inches a year give or take. Winters are quite snowy and snow doesn't melt until late March or early April.
Currently planning a guerilla grow in the wilderness and there's an area already scoped out. The soil is pretty good but silty and needs to be broken up.
My primary question is are poppies likely to survive in this environment with no watering? Tending to/watering them is not really an option save for a few visits to prepare/weed/thin etc and I don't want to waste a bunch of effort preparing a spot for them if they are unlikely to survive. Vegetation currently inhabiting the area are juniper, sagebrush, field grasses, various wildflowers, clover etc.
Thanks.

Poppies yeild the most potent resin when it's been dry during flowering. I think they are going to need some water up to that point. Not really sure on the specific needs as they are fairly maintenance free.
Sow during the rainy season. I think they flower in long days. Had some white Persian and they only got a few inches tall with a late sowing. Also had a beautiful pink heirloom from Italy another time.

I have grown them at ~4600ft elevation successfully. I watered them but don't know how much they actually needed it. Good luck.

I could probably keep the sprouts moist since there is a stream about 100 yards away, just not provide them with continuous water through the growth stage etc. Anyway...
Another question I have is whether seeds will ripen in the pod and be viable after the pod is harvested when still green; say if it is cut around the time when opium is traditionally harvested 1-2 weeks after the petals fall will the seeds continue to ripen in the pod if it is left to dry, or would one would need to leave them to ripen on the plant?

The pod will start to,open under the crown when the seeds are dry and mature. That is how they spread.

Ya but will they continue to ripen in the pod after the pod has been cut or do you have to leave the pod to ripen on the plant?

The pod will not mature once decapitated from the root. Lacing is the traditional method getting resin. You can always leave a few pods to mature and still get plenty of seed.
