Compromised petris totally useless?
    #23518780 - 08/07/16 12:29 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyone! This is technically my first post, but I've been lurking on this forum and absorbing knowledge from all you brilliant people for almost a year now. I've had a few successful grows since then (started off growing PE with a PF tek kit I got as a gift; don't recommend it, lol) and I've experimented with agar a couple of times but no success so far.

I bought a sleeve of 25 petris off eBay a few months ago for the next experiment I was planning, but I didn't end up having the time and I put the sleeve in a box for storage with some other supplies. Months later I realized there were some small holes scraped in the plastic sleeve, and there are particles of dirt (probably verm or coir bits) all up and down the whole thing, I can see some stuck in the rims of the petris and maybe a speck or two in the dishes themselves.

So I figure these are useless now, but I hate to toss the whole sleeve without even opening it. Is there anything at all I can do with these, like just for fun? Would it be at all possible to open the sleeve in a SAB and wipe down each plate with 91% iso before pouring and then use them for clones and see if any stay contam free? Or would that just be a huge waste of time and agar media?

I'd wipe them with iso, then sterilize in the pressure cooker.  Put their lids on, and put the petris themselves inside a lidded tupperware (whatever fits in your PC).  Perhaps even cover it with foil, in case the lid opens. This both keeps moisture from getting inside them, and also allows you to move them to your sterile work area without recontaminating them on the way over.

You can't sterilize traditional plates in a PC. You will end up with a melted glop of shit.

Those are probably fucked but you could give em a try. Some might come out clean.

Nah, either way I'm not gonna PC them, but I might just wipe and pour like half of them for the hell of it and see if I can grow some clean plates for grain spawn.

I also have some Pasty Plates I tried making last week as an alternative, but unfortunately my cheap PC malfunctioned before they were at pressure for very long. Most of them got fuzzy or yeasty looking but I have four left that still look okay, so I was planning to clone some pins to them today just to see what happens. haha

Don't wipe them. Alcohol kills 99.99% which is not nearly enough to clean a plate. Wiping the plates is going to increase the odds against. Just use em as is and wait a week before using them. Toss any that grow nasty stuff.

Ok, will do, thanks for the advice.

I think I'm gonna pick up one of these, I'll be able to do 7 rye jars (or 6 and one agar jar lol) which seems just about perfect for me right now. Does that look okay, or just a total piece of shit?

Ah shit, I wasn't even thinking about what kind of plastic those are.  I just PC'd some glass ones the other day.
