First bulk grow with a Mexi-cube clone on WBS spawned to coir!! * 1
    #23516894 - 08/06/16 07:50 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hello everyone.  I have decided to post my first ever bulk grow using WBS spawned to coir/verm via Damions50/50 tek.  I have been using the PF-tek for years with never any real desire to go with grains  Then I had a strange shift in consciousness after a 14 dried grams trip about 6 months ago and before I knew it, I had started becoming curious with grains and bulk subs.  I also became very infatuated with the size of the fruits I was seeing on here with bulk monos.

So I read up on as much information as I could possibly find on bulk grow teks for the past 6 months or so and finally made it happen.  Here are my WBS jars when they were colonizing along my LC's containing a couple clones of some Mexi-cubes with 100% zero contam rate.

Then after the WBS was fully colonized I used what i had and made a couple of dubtubs out of some 16qt. totes and a couple of monotubs out of some 56qt totes.

So this is where I am at right now and am very happy with my results so far.  I know I shouldn't count my chickens yet but I have a pretty good background on fruiting mushrooms with pf cakes and avoiding contamination so I feel confident in my effort.

Also i would like to thank all the wonderful members of this forum for their hard work and taking time to post knowledgeable info for others.

Thanks, I am forever thankful for this forum and the hard working cultivators here.  :bow2:

Oh I forgot to mention that the 16qt dubtubs were mixed with around a 1:1 ratio  loaded with 4qts of spawn and around 4-5qts of sub.  The 2 56qt monotubs were mixed with around a 1:2-3 ratio using 6qts of spawn and close to 9qts of sub.

Looks good man, you'll be happy to jump to bulk! Just a few questions and suggestions.

First of all you mention 50/50 coir Verm for the sub. I'm assuming that wasn't a mis type. That is a common error from the users name who posted the basic bulk Tek most of us follow. The ratio is closer to 8:2 coir/Verm.

Also are those half pint wide mouths on the bottom no pour agar jars?

My bad, yeah thats a typo.  You are correct on the 8:2 coir verm ratio.  I was definitely thinking of Damions 50/50 tek, and not the ratio.

The wide mouth half-pint jars are my liquid cultures. I successfully cloned 2 mexi-cubes to karo/water since that was all i had laying around.  I am waiting patiently for the proper supplies needed for agar work to arrive via mail.

Nice work!  Way to research and apply.  Someone in the gourmet forum mentioned replacing verm with balsa.  Sounds better than verm but might be pricey?  Anyway, keep up the good work!

Just for reference, these tubs are cased? That is...has a casing layer?

I like your setup mate.  Looks great.  Do you intend for this to be a log then?  If so, I'll be following for sure.

Thanks guys!!  Hard work and patience really does payoff. :boxing:

These tubs are not cased.  I decided not to add a casing layer based on the fact that I've been able to maintain the RH at 95% and or higher with ease. I just mixed the spawn and sub really well and topped them off with leftover sub so no grains were left in the open. It took a few days after I initiated fruiting to get my tubs in tune order to keep the RH high and still allow for proper FAE.

I guess the only way to tell if you have proper FAE is by visually inspecting the primordia and  dry rings around the poly.  Maybe someone could chime in on how they know if they are getting proper FAE.

I suppose I could make this a log.  I will be adding updates with pics as the grow matures.

You're getting proper FAE when the surface moisture from misting evaporates about every 12 or so hours, in an SGFC.  This can happen more often if you want to mist more often as long as you are keeping humidity within acceptable ranges.

In a monotub, the dry ring around the polyfil extends about a half inch around each hole.  To increase, loosen poly.  To decrease, tighten poly.

Right ok well then I should be good.  I've been letting the surface of the sub glisten with tiny droplets and I only mist once or twice a day indirectly.  The ring around the poly is anywhere from a half inch to 3/4 of an inch out.  So my daredevil guess is that they are receiving decent FAE

Ideally a properly dialed in monotub will not need misting at all:

This tub has been in fruiting conditions for 10 days and has never been misted.

You should always have a pretty distinct layer of water droplets at the surface of a properly dialed in mono tub without misting.

Right on, makes sense.  Thats good to know M217, thanks.  I will try no misting for a few days and report back with conclusions.

On a side note one of my monos is pretty far behind, only has one tiny pin and never showed any signs of knotting.  Visual inspection of the sub shows no sign of contams or that its too dry or wet and the smell is of that succulent mushroom scent.  Its been fruiting now for almost 14 days. Maybe its just taking its sweet, oddball time.

How did it look when you put it into fruit mode?  Cased?  Temp and light?

Didn't see the pic until after post, but my questions are the same.

It looked pretty much the same with the exception of being a little more fuzzy due to the intially higher CO2 at the beginning of fruiting.

It wasn't cased along with the rest of my tubs with temps remaining around 73-76° and lights set to 12/12.

Yeah it doesn't need cased, especially if it's a mono.  I case, but it's preference really.  If in an SGFC I always case to prevent drying/support a microclimate.

Anyway, 14 days is not that uncommon, but that sub looks really, really wet.  Try giving it more fresh air, until you start seeing some evaporation.  Ease up on any misting/stop misting altogether.  Shouldn't need to mist a mono anyway too often if at all.

Quck update: So one of my dub tubs has exploded with pins and it all seems to have happened in the blink of an eye!  I have a feeling these guys are going to be pretty big.  They are as wider or wider than a No. 2 pencil.

Update i went ahead and harvested a dry oz. out of one of my dubtubs.  The majority of the mushrooms picked had just broken their veils, and that wasn't even half of the flush!

After harvesting said mushrooms i poured about a quart amd a half of spring water into the bottom of the tub and within 2 hours the cake consumed everybit of it.  I know one should strive for a single harvest of a flush, and maybe I will get there on the next round of jars.  Sorry for the blurry pic.  Here is the cake after harvesting 1 dry oz.  Looks like Im still going to have an excellent harvest.

Here are some pics of my other tubs fruiting and doing their thing.
