Of course it's possible to do that using an absentee ballot. So why aren't there laws requiring proof of ID for absentee balloting? Why is it that the only kind of voting where there is demonstrable evidence of fraud not being reformed? Instead, it's about early voting and in person voting, where there is almost no fraud taking place.

The fact is that poor, minority and black voters are far more likely to not have the kind of ID these laws require. Legislatures know this. They look at the demographics, and have designed these laws to specifically target groups that are more likely to vote democratic. That's why you don't see reforms for absentee voting, because that kind of voting is popular with republicans. The motives for these laws are obvious. Thankfully the courts are there to knock them down for what they are - racist.

African Americans are less likely than whites to hold varied kinds of government-issued IDs, with percentages of blacks without such IDs ranging from nearly 4 percent to more than 26 percent and percentages of whites having such an ID ranging from 1 percent to nearly 14 percent.

Quote:

HOUSTON — In his wallet, Anthony Settles carries an expired Texas identification card, his Social Security card and an old student ID from the University of Houston, where he studied math and physics decades ago. What he does not have is the one thing that he needs to vote this presidential election: a current Texas photo ID.

For Settles to get one of those, his name has to match his birth certificate — and it doesn’t. In 1964, when he was 14, his mother married and changed his last name. After Texas passed a new voter-ID law, officials told Settles he had to show them his name-change certificate from 1964 to qualify for a new identification card to vote.

So with the help of several lawyers, Settles tried to find it, searching records in courthouses in the D.C. area, where he grew up. But they could not find it. To obtain a new document changing his name to the one he has used for 51 years, Settles has to go to court, a process that would cost him more than $250 — more than he is willing to pay.

“It has been a bureaucratic nightmare,” said Settles, 65, a retired engineer. “The intent of this law is to suppress the vote. I feel like I am not wanted in this state.”

Pris, why aren't expired IDs good for voting? Does someone's identity expire? Why aren't student IDs issued by a state owned university good for voting? Why isn't there a way to get an acceptable ID at no cost? You know the reason. Because it's no about preventing fraud, it's about making it difficult for certain types of people to vote.

Lawmakers know how to make laws that don't limit access while still requiring ID. These are the IDs acceptable for buying Pseudoephedrine.

  • United States passport (unexpired or expired)
  • A driver's license or identification card containing a photograph, issued by a State or an outlying possession of the United States. If the driver's license or identification card does not contain a photograph, identifying information shall be included such as: name, date of birth, sex, height, color of eyes, and address.
  • School identification card with a photograph.
  • Voter's registration card.
  • U.S. military card or draft record.
  • Identification card issued by Federal, State, or local government agencies or entities. If the identification card does not contain a photograph, identifying information shall be included such as: name, date of birth, sex, height, color of eyes, and address.
  • Military dependent's identification card.
  • Native American tribal documents.
  • United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card.
  • School record or report card
  • Clinic doctor or hospital record.
  • Daycare or nursery school record.

Holder was right. The polifact link has the evidence.

You don't need a picture ID to register to vote. You just need to prove the person registering lives at the address they are registering at. This is federal law for registering to vote in federal elections.

Neither does a drivers license.

NOBODY is asserting that showing ID is intended to determine someone's eligibility to vote - that is determined when you register to vote. The ID law is simply about proving you are the person who has already been determined eligible and is registered, so why are so many types of IDs not acceptable?

You don't find it a little strange that you can use your voter registration card to buy Pseudoephedrine, but not to vote?

If eligibility was the intent, then drivers licenses and gun licenses would be unacceptable voter ID since you don't have to be a US citizen to have either of those. If proving eligibility was the intent, only a birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers would be acceptable since they are the only documents that prove your citizenship.

Because they don't drive. Because they don't have bank accounts. Because they don't fly on airplanes.

And they usually do have some kind of way to prove their identity. They just don't have the kind of ID these laws require, and that is by design.

The fact that a Texas Handgun License is acceptable but a Texas University ID is not (both are state issued picture IDs), demonstrates the partisan nature of these laws. College students are predominately liberal and concealed carriers are predominately conservative.
