First timer, fruits not forming
    #23516272 - 08/06/16 03:19 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hi there!
This is my first attempt at growing mushrooms so please be kind:blush:

I started my jars on 6-15-16 with a liquid culture I made a few weeks prior. All jars seemed to work with (what I believe to be) no contamination.

7-12-16 After the  jars had been fully colonized for a week, I rinsed and submerged the cakes in water for 24 hours. Then I rolled in vermiculite and placed them in the fruiting chamber I had just made. After an hour I sprayed them lightly with water. I checked daily, opening the top and fanning them. Two weeks passed. The cakes began to shrink. Finally one cake produced 2 mushrooms.

On 8-1 after harvesting the two mushrooms, I again dunked all cakes. By this point I had 3 more cakes ready so I put them all in the fruiting area. I added a humidifier and a fan set to turn on a couple times a day for a few minutes. This time I didn't roll them in vermiculite, not sure why not, but I just figured I would try different variables. Today I moved one of the new cakes straight to the perlite and off of the foil.

Anyways am I just not being patient enough, or am I doing something wrong? I really appreciate any help and suggestions you might have to share with a complete beginner.

Hi OP,

welcome to the shroomery. You have a nice looking setup....seems like you have followed the PF Tek to a T. Well done. Most people don't get this far....

you mentioned you misted and fanned your cakes and later, two mushrooms appeared. May I ask, are you misting and fanning daily? Misting and fanning needs to be done atleast 3x daily to achieve proper humidity and maintain moisture content. From your post this is the only problem I can see...

One glaring item is the size of the foil under your cakes.  It should show out from under the cake by only a tiny amount, say 1/4" or so, no more.  You are obstructing your air flow.  Keep your cakes moist, or glistening, but not wet and you should see production improve.

Hi psilocyBen, I really appreciate your response.

I have only been fanning and misting once a day. And I've only been misting the walls of the tub and not the cakes directly. I've read so many conflicting things about spraying the cakes.
I will start fanning more and try misting the cakes directly.

Thanks again!

Good point. I had just moved one cake straight to the perlite because I thought it might not have enough moisture. Do you know what the function of the foil is even for?

mist the cakes directly. mist ehen the cakes get dry until the are glistening with tiny beads of moisture. then let them dry. when those beads are gone, mist again. this is usualy something like 2-3 times a day, but sometimes more or less depending on what the environment is like wehre you live. i mist abotu twice a day, and sometimes i even over mist a little. but some need to mist up to 5x a day.. i think you get what i mean.

and put that cake back on foil. you dont wan them on the perlite.

cakes go on foil. you're not outsmarting decades of SGFC use by not using it.

don't fan more times than you mist. you fan only after you mist. you don't have to fan at all. the SGFC has 100s of holes

Got it. Thank you. Not sure where I read not to mist directly but I will start doing it like you said.

 I figured it wouldn't hurt to try with one cake since they weren't doing anything. But I will go put it back on a smaller piece of foil. Is the foil just to keep it from touching the non-sterilized perlite or does it serve a greater purpose? And are you saying I went overboard with my holes on my tub? I appreciate your advice greatly.

about cakes directly on perlite

cakes can touch stuff that's not sterile. like the air they're bathing in at all times. or your hands when you pick them up.

The foil seals off air so inhibits bottom pins.  It is also a convenient place to bottom water a cake if you think it needs some extra help.

That makes sense. I will trim up that foil and start spraying a few times a day. They already seem to have shrunk a bit since Monday so I think I will try the watering technique you just mentioned. Again, I really appreciate the help. Just knowing I haven't completely screwed it up is reassuring.

It may just be the pic but is there enough holes is that sgfc doesn't look like a 2" x2" grid pattern may just be the picture

It's probably more like a hole every 2.5 to 3 inches.
When I put my first cakes in last month, they got this fuzzy look overnight which I believe I read was from not enough FAE. Since then I started leaving the lid very slightly ajar and the fuzziness hasn't come back. Next time I guess I will put more holes!! Thank you for you input. I'm grateful for every set of experienced eyes that lend a hand.

On a 66qt tub you'll drill about 344 holes.  You might want to switch hands with the drill occasionally.

If your cakes are getting fuzzy you will want to drill more holes, simply cracking the lid isn't going to provide proper FAE.

Ok. Would it be ok to remove the cakes to drill more holes or should I buy another tub? I hate wasting plastic. :frown:

You can do that.  Just be gentle and try to be quick so they're not drying out too long in the open air.  If you trust yourself, you can drill with them in, just don't drill your cakes.  Make sure you've got an adequate number of holes in the lid to let air flow out through the top.

Here is what one properly drilled out looks like.  Notice holes are on all six sides.

Well I feel dumb now! I didn't have any holes on my lid. I have them on the bottom and sides but completely neglected the lid. Don't know how I missed that! I really appreciate it. I'm off to drill some more holes right now.

So I drilled more holes on the sides and on the lid, tidied up the foil, and gave the cakes a good misting.

While placing the cakes back on the foil I noticed pins on the bottom of two cakes. (Neither of them were the cake I had placed directly on the perlite) Since these were the only pins on the cakes I turned them upside down so the pins were on the top. Is this the correct thing to do or should I have left the pins underneath the cakes??

Also I noticed some funky colors :frown: one had a bluish tint and the other kinda a rust color.

I've turned cakes many times.  Basically it's just telling you your microclimate is better suited to growing on the bottom than the top, so you'll need to correct that in the future.  But turning it over will be fine

The rust color looks like mycelium metabolites that have dried up a bit.  Not an issue.

I don't know if I should make a new thread or not but I still need some wisdom and guidance from you kind folks.

I now have a few cakes with some pins. I've been misting and fanning 2-3x a day. I work 12 hour shifts so they have to go about 13 hours alone 3 days a week :frown:

When I came home from work there was more fuzz than usual on one cake and I just want you guys to please look at it. I'm sorry to have daily questions but I really do appreciate all your help.
