Has anyone ever put their tomatoes in the freezer for storage?

My garden is going insane right now. I have waaaaaay to many tomatoes. I looked it up. I thought canning them or drying them was the only option. But apparently freezing them is a normal thing to do. It feels weird to me for some reason...
Has anyone ever done that? Freeze a whole tomato?

Nope. I make sauce and can it, and dry some, but never freeze them.
I always give the extra to friends when I have too many tomatoes.

I'd find it hard to believe a long time poster like you doesn't have the means to can food.

Yup. I just didn't think you were that big of a chode.
But like another poster said, when you freeze them and they thaw they turn into a puree. It's fucking gross.
Do it right and can them.

You shouldn't ever freeze your fresh tomatoes. Not even refrigerate them.
They lose so much flavor once they are cooled down that much.
It's especially a shame to do that if you grew them yourself. If you just had some walmart tomatoes, I'd say go for it.
Listen to the people, Patlal.
Can them. Only thing you can really do to preserve them.
Or you could cook them down to a sauce and freeze that. Probably would be good for a few months, if not longer.

This.
Your tomatoes would be mush after freezing and thawing, and the flavor dulled. If that's not something you're worried about then sure, freeze em.

you can do it, but they don't thaw all that well (and like a previous poster said, they tend to lose flavor). also, they take up a ton of room in the freezer

Sounds horrible. The wook dude is right. Can them, it's not very smart to freeze any produce, I think it has to do with damaging cell walls and turns everything mushy.

Does that really matter that much if you end up making sauce or something from them afterwards though? You're not going to want to put mushy thawed tomatoes in a salad, but for cooking why should it matter?
I've never frozen whole tomatoes but I've made sauce and froze that, worked out fine. No complaints with the flavor.

Never frozen a tomato.
I believe some tomatoes accidentaly became frozen in the fridge. I think when they thawed out, they were all limp like a deflated ballon. They were cherry tomatoes, if i remember correctly.
Try it, might work out

A lot of tomatoes here come from Dutch greenhouses, grown under lights.
They taste like red water.
I don't go for them any more.
I sometimes get decent Roma tomatoes.

I just like to freeze them becouse I can get all my crops into a few big bags and store them indefinitely in the freezer works great for sauce.
I pretty much just use them for sauce too so even if they lose some flavor it is not really noticeable in a rich sauce full of other delicious stuff.

I have thawed the tomato!
Result:
- Taste is exactly the same - Texture is ruined!
Conclusion:
- Perfectly good idea if you plan on making a sauce or just dice it and make meals with it. Sandwiches and slices are out of the question.

We all know that plant cells burst when fozen because water expands when freezing.
And Obviosuly the salts, sugars and flavinoids in the tomato aren't going anywhere so flavor shouldn't change.
So Patlal knew the answer before he even made this thread, he just made the thread cause fuck it.

The freezing process ruins the delicate structure of the tomato.
. So it begs the question: Was it worth it?
The way I see it. It's pretty much the same as canning it. You get the same squishy tomato pulp

Yeah cold tends to slow chemical reactions, it doesn't really make sense to me that freezing would do much in the way of altering the molecules that influence flavor. The articles I've been able to find on this all seem to be saying that refrigeration slows/halts the action of enzymes that produce flavor molecules. To me that doesn't really seem to point in the direction of flavor loss, more like preventing the flavor from developing further.

Patlal, what kind of tomatoes are you growing?
I only grew one variety this year, a yellow/orangeish heirloom variety called "gold medal". It's low acid, for a 'mater.

I grow roma tomatoes, hothouse tomatoes and cherry tomatoes that don't grow bigger than the size of a dime (they are amazing).
My Bulgari roommate brought me seeds from Bulgaria and it's 3 new strains. So next year I'll be growing these. Since it's foreign it'll probably take over the entire North American ecosystem.

I used to grow a cherry tomato called "sweet 100", they were awesome. I need to grow those again next year.
