Pressure cooker questions....
    #23513824 - 08/05/16 06:38 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Okay, so I prepared my own substrate today with the verm, brf and water recipe. Now my only issue is this pressure cooker that I have.. I want to make sure this is done properly, but I don't know how to use the controls on this thing and the owners manual is MIA. I'm hoping someone on here is familiar with this type of cooker and can point me in the right direction for proper sterilization. So far I haven't been able to produce any steam. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

would be great if you gave us some info about the pressure cooker you have or a picture of something identifying on it. otherwise asking a fortune teller may be more appropriate

I was afraid with mine as well.

If you've got a standard pressure cooker like this one:

Then all you need to do is fill it slightly (depends on capacity, but ~2" was good in mine) and put the "pressure regulator" loosely on the top.

Then seal it up with your goods and turn on the heat. The "pressurized" valve should stick out once pressure is building up, which tells you that it's under pressure (don't open).

Ehh, yeah. I was able to fit 8 in there though. So apparently nobody knows how to use this thing. Looks like I'll be getting another one anyhow. One that can hold more and one that isn't electric.

Buy a presto or a mirro. Presto would be better if you can afford it, the 16quart one will hold 7 jars and is pretty damn cheap if you ask me. 23 quart will hold 2-3 more jars depending on what type they are. I'm talking about quart jars btw, you can fit a shitload of PF jars in there.

If you are going ahead and buying a PC, there's nothing stopping you from going straight to grains man. IMO the PF tek is for the people who either can't afford or don't want a PC. You can spawn your grains to small trays and fill a monotub with them, basically reducing your chances of failure to the same you would have with cakes. The yields are also much better and it is way easier to get and hold proper conditions than cakes. I'm sure some cake lovers will disagree with me, so this is just :2cents:

BTW, I'm sure there was a thread a week or two ago about an electric PC being used for PF jars. The OP said it works good but you have to keep in mind that most of those PCs only go to about 11psi.

Presto's kick ass. I own a 23quart one myself and it's one of the most useful things I have ever owned for mycology. I do still wish that I was a rich asshole so I can buy one of those 41 quart electric AA's but I guess that dreaming of them will have to suffice

My experience with the electric PC (Power Cooker XL) has been bad for grains.  Of the three times I used it, all jars had bacteria.  Picked up a Presto and now I'm contam free.  There was a few articles about that model and it's canning abilities with grains, meats, greens.

In case you're still interested in using it, press the Canning/Preserving button, then the Time Adjustment (it goes up 10 minutes every time you press it).  The max is 2 hrs.  And set the pressure valve to the Seal position.  It'll take about 10-15minutes for the timer to start.

I have the 23 quart presto too and it rules.  10 quart jars can be PC'd at a time, and it's just one big fucking pot.  When I was poor I actually used it to do my laundry one time too.

I use an electric one much like yours. I always just set it on the highest setting (mine goes 1-9), and after a few minutes, the valve goes up and I start 90 minute count. It works fine, only I can fit 5 pints at a time, until my 16 qt Presto gets here

My 75x does 16 quarts (without liner) at a time and goes up to 30 psi before overpressure valve goes.

16 jars damn, I bitch having clean out enough grain for 10 jars decanting the water with more grains would blow.  Probably just clean it differently though I would assume?

You have to be if you want one and you live where I live. The wages here suck balls. Alls I can do is dream.

Not saying you had it easy, IIRC you had to pay the same as I would have if I ever did buy one, which is kind of ridiculous given how closer to the US Canada is than the EU. I'm betting the wages over there allow a bit more for those kind of buys at least.

Yeah, we talked about that a few weeks back, it would cost me about the same amount to ship it to the EU. Still, dropping like $1300 on a PC where I'm from is impossible if you weren't born just a little bit rich.

I've got a presto 16 qt pressure canner 01745. It fits 8 screw top pp5s for agar and a dozen half pints. Can fit 15 if you don't want them on their sides. Seven quart jars fit as do 18 small pp5 "pasty plates". It's a good starter one. If I could go back I'd have gotten a bigger one.

Don't forget when you store it, remove the gasket from the lid. You also need to check it right out of the box. Make sure to rinse all parts so you don't get metal shavings. The directions suggest using olive oil on the gasket but I get by with tugging it twice (long way and tall way, it's a circle but you know what I mean) every 2 runs or so. Just enough to feel it have that strong pull.

When you PC stuff, bring it to temperature and then put the rocker on and start your timer. Never take the rocker off until it's hours later. They stay hot a long time.

The one thing I don't like about these is the valve spits out a lot of hot water before coming to pressure. This part also loosened on me and I lost it. Make sure things are tight and read the manual twice. It's easy to lose the weights on the rocker too. I always suggest people do a dry run with 2 quarts of water to test a standard BRF cycle.

Stoned ramblings but hope this helps some.

I'm curious, why do you remove the gasket when storing?

I noticed the leaking water as well, mainly from that pop-up safety "pin" that goes up when there is pressure so the lid is locked in place. Not sure if that's what you mean. I concur about making sure that things are tight, this safety pin I just mentioned came off a while ago from loosening itself during my cycles, a shitload of steam rushed out and I thought that it exploded or some shit. However, don't use tools to get them as tight as you can or anything, aluminium is rather soft compared to other metals. The manual even says to only tighten the pressure gauge nut by hand, no tools.

Someone recommended it to me as good practice. Like if you accidentally pinch the gasket while closing it before you put it away, it'll eventually cause damage to the seal. And yeah I mean that little plug or whatever. There's a way to tighten it so it stops spinning. I don't know if it is a parts issue but since I got the replacement one it doesn't do anything. I still check that after every cycle though. I'd definitely recommend at least putting your finger between the gasket and "pinch it open" and spin it. It seems to be working for me. I don't remember who said this but I remember it being a seasoned grower while I was still learning. It closes easier and it's as tight as the day I got it.. it doesn't accidentally pinch when I close it anymore. They can get dried and cracked if not kept up on and can cause psi issues IIRC.

My gasket shrinks after each PC cycle, I have to manually stretch it again or it will leak. It's getting worse over time but the gasket still seems strong and rubbery. I really need to buy a replacement, if this thing goes I'll be without a PC for a week or two.

Work some olive oil into it. Don't get too stretchy with it. Really work it in like shining a shoe or softening a baseball glove. Really put some time in it like getting the inside groove and use your thumb to really get it in there. You can keep olive oil in a small cup to dip your fingers in so it's not a giant mess.

Once it's soaked let it sit for a day to let the oil get in. Then just stretch it gently as you turn it clockwise, your thumb working the big inside groove as you go. You can get the outside along with the flaps when you go over it again. Work some more oil into it, let sit overnight or two days, clean oil off with a paper towel and voilà. Never stretch a cracked or dry one or overdo it and it's not an exercise band.

So you think that it will retain it's shape if I use olive oil? I was thinking that the heat is what's making it shrink.

If I'm understanding you correctly and I'm explaining it right. Lube it up and tug it and it'll be like new again. You can even run a PC cycle after your oiling is done (without wiping it with a paper towel) to make sure it makes a seal. Actually I remember doing this for my mother when she would make roasts and stuff for us when I was a kid. I'm smoking 4 new kinds of weed out of 2 new pieces so I'm all over the place.

So wait your gasket is fucked? Pics.

My gasket seems perfectly fine but after the cycle, once it cools, it will shrink. If I don't stretch it back to where it's nice and snug under the lid, it will leak. It's not hard, dry or cracking but I reckon there is only so much stretching and heating and contracting thing will be able to take.

This is the gasket before I stretch it.

After.

It was worse when I didn't know what was going on, before I was stretching it I kept giving it cycle after cycle so it was pretty bad at one point. Bad enough where water would be dripping every 2 seconds or so.

What I do is close the lid with the shrunken gasket for a couple of minutes, enough for the gasket to warm up but not too much for it to be too hot and then I stretch it slowly, rotating it with every stretch. That way I'm not stressing the material so much and it also stretches faster when warm.
