White flies
    #23512801 - 08/05/16 01:18 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Well white flies are reaking havoc in the garden. For some time now what i felt was intervenal chlorosis, i hope that is spelled right, has been whitefly damage. Everytime i shook my coca and cacao these little flies would fly around the plant. I mean in droves. I never even stopped to google why my plant were being light colored on the leaves. I just thought it might be iron deficiency. Stuck rusty nails in the soil and forgot about it. Nothing. Well iron and iron chelates are 2 different things. Anywho then i googled whitefly damage and there it was in black and white. They suck the juices. Leave their shit and fuck shit up. Basically.

Its fast approaching the dog days of summer and some hell is breaking loose in the garden. Anybody else battling pests?

Well from what i read they are very tolerant of chemicals. Which means they dont work. So i bought some insecticidal soap and it seems to have worked ok. Water based and not at all oily like neem. But i read neem works as well too. They have made little holes in my carolina reaper.

Yeah i sat there one day like a muppet waiting til they landed on a leaf then a squished them all hahahaha  tedious, but seems to have worked hahahahaha. Theyre indoors so was easier to battle i guess. I think the neem caused little dark spots on sally so wont use it again. Think it was the neem anyway.

I burnt the crap out of my citrus tree one year using neem. There is a reason why youre not supposed to use it during the day.

I really like insecticidal soap. It works awesome on aphids. And now my preferred method for asshole whiteflies. And its organic.

Hey there. I work in a commercial grow and have battled many a pest. I haven't encountered whiteflies though. Mostly spider mites, thrips, fungus gnats, and root aphids. I would go with Azamax, it works great on all of those pests, and whiteflies are on the label. It is even approved by the Colorado Department of Agriculture for use on cannabis. Azamax is an emulsifiable concentrate, basically an extract of neem oil. I would start off with a half dose, 30ml to 1 gallon of water. But if it is a bad problem, a full 60ml/1 gal dose would be in order. Make sure the lights are off when you spray and make sure to wait for the plants to dry before turning the lights back on. Failure to do so will cause severe leaf damage. You should probably do a test on one plant just to make sure, never hurts. Make sure to get nice even coverage, and perhaps use a surfactant or a wetting agent such as CocoWet to help with coverage.

Azamax works systemically, so you might not see total death right off that bat. But once the Azamax starts working, they will die from eating the leaves. It's pricey, but I've saved an entire commercial grow with it. Apply Azamax again several days after the first application. I'm not sure what the life cycle of a whitefly is, but my theory is that there will be new whiteflies hatching and breeding while the Azamax takes effect. Maybe try a third application a week after the second application. Monitor the leaves, undersides too. Maybe get some yellow sticky traps to help you monitor.

There are other products out there too, I just suggest Azamax because of how effective it is. If you have any other questions, let me know.

I battle white flies and worms, only real problems thus far.  I also burnt my tomato plants with Neem spray, so am adding neem cake to the soil to see if it helps.  I will have to try the insecticidal soap, thanks.

Thanks guys. Good stuff. Pest abound all over. I dont think i will be trying the Azamax though. I will go every other route before i go with neem. Bad experiences and all.

I know your pain man.

They have eaten holes in all my plants in the Solanaceae family, and caused a ,lot of my pepper plants to turn yellow, and chlorotic.
I have had to pull half of them due to those bastards:mad2:

Nothing works to combat them effectively either, but I have been spraying everything down with neem oil,and it works for all the other pests, and fungus, just not white flies like it says on the label.
I mean it does work minimally for a day or so,they they all come back something awful!

Like I said my plants in the Solanaceae family are the most effected Tomatoes,Peppers,Tonatillos,Eggplants, etc, but the Tomatillos, and Ground Cherry plants I have get it the worst!

What's weird is that they wont touch any of my super Hot Pepper plants, just all my sweet Peppers, and all my other plants are pretty much fine in the non Solanaceae family of plants.

What is a guy to do?

Here it is.

Using that isn't practical for me,as I have hundreds of plants that  need to be sprayed.

I actually bought some of that exact spray early on,and I ran out before I was even halfway done spraying everything.

In order for me to effectively spray all my plants using that,I would have to buy several bottles, and at $6 dollars a bottle,so I'd just rather let all my plants die than be broke:lol:

I have Neem Oil concentrate, and it has lasted me a couple of months.
You only mix two table spoons to a gallon, and that goes a long way.

I think my problem is, that I'm not spraying mine often like it says to do,and it's loosing it's effects.
I mean,I can't say that it totally doesn't work, because my Eggplants were eaten up bad,and now the damge is looking minimal, now that I think of it.

However the Groundcherries and Tomatillos just can't shake the White Flies, and the Neem doesn't seem to really work at all on them:mad2:

Other than that, all my other plants in the garden look fantastic with minimal bug damge.

Youre righr on those grounds. I have 4 plants that have it. So for me this is the most cost effective option. Oh and i sprayed my hirsuta seedlings with it too. I repotted one and that one alone wilted on me. Not dead but it doesnt look good.

I got neem concentrate but it dont really like it because it doesnt mix well with water and you got to keep constantly shaking the bottle and then that bottle will never be re-used. And some times it clogs the sprayer.

Watch out spraying sensitive plants and seedlings with sprays,it can kill them:wink:

Yeah,my Neem mixes well,and I still use the same bottle,plus it's organic,so it's all I'll use for now:cool:

This was my go to for a long time.  Good immediate knock down effect, as well as the other neem type benefits.  Azamax, azatrol, or similar neem distillate
