I discovered some amazing posts by SPitballJedi last night:
I wanted to turn people to this post in particular:
WHY You Should Really Start With Agar by SpitballJedi and this agar tek by Pastywhyte.
Turns out, agar is not that difficult to do. You just need to find agar from an asian store, or order the damn thing online and get some potato flakes and some gladware which you could find from any store. Everything else like a PC, foil, etc you should have already.
You only need a DROP from your spore syringe (or a piece of mushroom) to grow some mycelium on some agar. And in doing so, you will be able to isolate the ones with the best genetics because of the way they branch out! Strong genetics = faster colonizing = bigger fruits and less headaches with contaminations.

also one of the biggest factors of agar is it will give you the chance create a clean culture by outrunning contams by transfering a wedge from the clean outside growth to a new plate and leave the contams behind in the original one. Once you have a clean culture the process is very easy as you will get much better BE and it will be very contam resistant in a bulk substrate. I rarely attempt to isolate anything (all my stuff is from ms>agar or clone>agar and then at least a couple transfers to ensure cleanliness) but getting a clean culture is the main goal.
If you are attempting isolating with ms you could end up with a weak or poor preforming culture.
same with isolating from a clone. You could be transferring away from the genetics that you desire.
Always test out your cultures especially when narrowing genetics before you go all out with it. good luck your definitely on the right track and passing up a ton of bs that many of us have experienced from skipping the important step of agar.
IT IS REALLY EASY

Yea, I am also currently very impressed by the results i've been having with agar. I used to be into cultivating a few years back and I took a long break because of a few things going on in real life. Back when I tried agar before I got a number of contams. I also thought quite a few times that water residue was in fact bacteria, so I would toss clean cultures being dumb. After coming back I feel like some kind of god with this agar. I ended up with so many plates that I am just tossing them left and right, not because contams or anything but because I just didn't like them as much as a few others. I have to play favorites here. Its been real fun.
AGAR FTW!!!

To all the other noobs out there thinking about using agar...
I dicked around with honey LCs for awhile because I had myself convinced agar was a very difficult thing to work with. Well one successful (oyster) grow and about 10 horridly bacterial failures later, I finally built a SAB and poured some jars of agar.
It's been a great experience so far, and being able to bypass SHIPs and just drop a wedge right on the grains has been really nice. Unlike LC I can immediately tell what cultures are clean or not too.
I'm trying my first attempt at making isolates from both spore prints and a wild bovista mushroom. Which is something I never could have done without agar.

Its just too easy and has such obviously good results when done correctly that there really isn't an excuse not to use agar, other than the lack of a PC. Pasty plates changed my whole approach to cultivation. Great results, clean cultures leading to clean spawn and good harvests. Need I say more. Thanks to the Gurus who make this journey possible and fun.

I'm like 12 posts in, and already on my second round of plates with a different species. It was actually your tek that convinced me to skip LC and spore-to-grain and do it right. Then I found the tek by Stropharis about strain isolation, and my inner nerd knew we had to do it.
