The Good, The Bad and The Ugly 1

Okay folks, here goes:
As it's been the main way I've learned everything in life, I'm taking a new approach to grow logs. This should help all you discouraged newbs from getting discouraged.
We all fuck up. We all get contams. The way to succeed in this hobby is to 'not get too attached to your babies'. I know it's hard, especially in the beginning. But, if you wanna get anywhere, you gotta know when to hold 'em, and when to fold 'em.
So this is the format that I'll be using. The first several posts here are for updating the grows. Each grow will be in it's own 'post' which will be updated with everything; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. You'll see where I fuck up. And where instead of crying in my oatmeal, I'll just throw the fuckers out, brush myself off and keep on truckin'.
In an attempt to help people spot problematic spawn, I'll even spawn some of the sketchier spawn I get. Just so we all get to learn and grow from this. These are just a few of what I'm playing around with now. So it's possible I'll make a sequel or even more from this idea if it goes somewhat as planned (having good, bad and ugly, of course!)
Everything here will be started from spores. All the cultures I have atm will be grown out and/or stored. I expect this thread to be updated over the next several months. I'm expecting around 4-5 months total in order to show the whole process, including the weeding out and transfer selection.
I will be using pp5 pastyplates for this, so the agar photos won't be amazing. But I'll take pics of them after transfers, and of all the contam'd plates.
I hope this start to finish format will help everyone out in the long run. I mostly hope this helps point some people in the right direction. I've learned a lot and had loads of help along the way, so I'm trying to give back something. The secondary goal here is to light a fire under my ass to get to work!
Keep in mind, it is possible this will be full of fail. But I'm not even gonna hide from that. I'm gonna share everything I can. Even if it's all just…

Also, special shout to Filthy Knees for helpin' me out and making me do a log!
For Reference, all agar in these logs are color coded: Red = Full ratio LMEA or Light Malt Extract Agar Blue = Decreased nutrition ratio LMEA Purple = Soft agar / full ratio PDA or Potato Dextrose Agar Green = Decreased nutrition ratio PDA Yellow = Full ratio PDA

Agar trials begin 8/5/16
Prepping the area (whole area and SAB sprayed with tap water): Organized workspace

Aftermath:

Update: August 20th
So I didn't think there was any exceptionally nice growth from any of the germinated plates. However, it wouldn't do us any harm to try and see if there's anything we can clean from these plates here.
A bunch of the transfers got Sloppy as manwiches for two reasons. I germinated on softer agar, so the softer agar can be a little tricky sometimes to transfer to and/or from.
I also accidentally poured the receiving dishes a bit too thin on a few plates. So I expect I'll likely see some satellites on at least 3-4 of the 11 transfers I took.
Here are some before pictures of the plates. The growth looks pretty clean on a lot of these, but also keep in mind there is a lot of vertical growth too. I realize that from spores (especially since I think I was a little heavy handed with them), there will likely be a good amount of bacteria riding along.
If you read some of the descriptions of Semperviva, you'll read that it's 'resistant to contams'. That's bullshit, of course. What's so curious is that the mycelium continues to have very clean looking growth despite having contams. Which of course is a very different thing. I haven't been playing around long with it, but It's something I noticed when I first took some clean looking transfers to grains.
Anyways, here's before:

And here's some pictures after the transfers. You can definitely see where I fucked up on at least one here.

That last one I just took a slice for the hell of it. I really didn't like the cut of it's jib at all.

whew. time for a little whiskey and a few and I'll just :crossmyfingers:

Agar trials begin 8/5/16
Prepping the area (whole area and SAB sprayed with tap water): Organized workspace, but forgot to take a pic.
Placed a couple drops from syringe to each swab after flaming, then swiped to plates.
Aftermath:

8/17 still no signs of germination. Along with a couple of the others here, I will be reswabbing. The PE comes in a syringe, of course. So, I'll be putting a few extra drops onto a swab and lightly swab a plate. I'll then tiger drop a gladround of agar on top. I'm busy today, but will be doing this in the next couple of days.

Organized workspace:

Aftermath:

Hey everyone, lets laugh at dank's ghetto-ass SAB
8/17: along with the AA+, it seems I accidentally used to many spores on the swabs. The growth is super thick and it's hard to see if there's any enmeshed molds. Being I had one plate mold soon after, I'll be doing agar sandwiches for the TXOC also.

Prepping the area (whole area and SAB sprayed with tap water): Then organized workspace while air settles.

Aftermath:

8/17: There appears to be a lot of bacteria riding along with these spores. I will be doing some agar sandwiches in the next several days to see if I can re-inoculate some plates and pull clean growth off of them.

Agar trials begin 8/5/16
Prepping the area (whole area and SAB sprayed with tap water): Then organized workspace while air settles.

Aftermath:

1st Transfers -- 8/14/16
Out of the 5 plates of Creeper, I picked the three that looked like they had the best looking growth. I tried to take some pics of them before any work done, so you can see my reasoning.
This is from a very dark print, so it was hard to place just enough spores down, and so a lot of the growth is very much vertical looking. Some a little more than I was really comfortable with.
As I had done before, I get the area all ready for work:

so here are the contestants I chose:

Here are the ones I decided against:

As you may be able to see, there is a lot of very cottony growth. It could be that some of this is clean enough to try and transfer from, but it didn't seem worth the trouble to even try honestly.
Here you can try and see why I chose the spots I picked. At least one transfer got totally fucked, from not making clean enough incisions in the soft agar. You'll see the ragged looking texture of the myc after the transfers, but this is in part due to going in hot with a still pretty hot scalpel. Though I cool it in the receiving plate, it still happens--especially with soft agar plates.

…and done for the day. I wanted to try and get more done, but it's been a really long day, and wasn't really able to. There were definitely a couple of spots I wanted to transfer from also, but I just couldn't :/. Tomorrow I should get some more done, and I have a couple of other side projects to catch up on…
