brf cakes not 100% colonised but small fruits growing?
    #23511556 - 08/05/16 02:25 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

My friend inoculated 5 jars almost 28 days ago.  So far three of the jars have not colonised completely but they have what seems to be fruits growing already.  The first pic show level of colonisation and the second pic a close up of the top with what she thinks is a mushroom - this is her second grow attempt ever, her first one sank due to contams before it got to the fruiting stage so you'll have to excuse her inexperience.

Should she birth them now or wait until her jars are fully colonised?  Thanks.

They are probably fruiting because contams are present, the thick growth and colonisation time indicate that too. If they have slowed down I would birth them and rise off the uncolonised portions of substrate.

EDIT: the top of the jar looks like mold, I can't tell for sure but it doesn't look good, I would make sure to rinse off all of the verm layer.

Thanks for the reply.  Guess all I can do is birth and see...growing mushrooms certainly gives you the opportunity to develop patience.  As for the top part, that's the dry verm layer and the pic makes it look awful.  IRL my friend's jars hasn't changed how it looks from day 1 so with any luck its just a crappy pic.  Finger's crossed.

Haha, jar twins!

Well my friend just birthed four and dumped one.  All four smelt lovely, just like mushrooms and one was contaminated and smelt bad/mouldy so chucked it.  Couldn't see/smell any contams, so hopefully all is good for the next step.
