I had a look at the container full of horse manure that I'd let dry out. Lo and behold a little bunch of P.alutacea had rehydrated from shrivelled up things since last nights rain.

Some good shit there.
Wonder if the spores are going through the digestive system of the horse or finding the shit latter thru the ground or air.
Good shit

That's a good question Bunya. Wish I had an answer for that one.

So having seen some P.alutacea coming up in the tub I went for a wander next door.

If you ate a handful of those while out picking, would you be schnockered? I ask since they're such fragile fruits and must lose a lot solely from handling. Stunning shots and thank you again it's amazing to see.

Thank you very much Adden.
I'm just taking pics now because I need large numbers to get out of it. They are fairly small now with the occasional good sized one. Numbers wise I'd need hundreds of those little ones for a good trip.

In Autumn when they average 10-15mm across the cap I can get mild effects off 30. Its more a weight than numbers game with P.alutacea because as you have implied there isn't much to them.

However when they fruit heavily in Autumn I could find hundreds in one pile of horse poo.

The top right. It's cool how strirate some are and some not. yet the stems are the same.

Yes if the fruiting body has enough moisture the gills are visible through the cap. It was sunny this afternoon so some specimens that are exposed to the sun won't show the striated cap as much as the others.

Having said that I have read conditions influence what the fruit body looks like. So there is variation from one to another. The pic in the middle if it had been in focus on the larger specimen I think the cap would have looked like the pic on the right.

I'm saying a fair bit about this because I found it confusing trying to ID P.alutacea from some P.tasmaniana when they were growing together. Easiest way was to look at what the mycelium was attached to. P.tasmaniana nearly always has the striated cap when its wet. Some P.alutacea do and they look very similar.

Good observation NothingsChanged.

You've got quite the fine eye. Very nice specimens. Our season is coming and I can only hope to get photos as good as yours. It's been a pleasure following this thread.

Wow thank you very much Lemon Hope. All the best for a very fruitful season.

They like it wet gamminEYE.

Its been raining all last night and today. Took the dogs for a walk and of course they wanted to go further. So I had another look next door. It was raining a bit hard and I didn't want to stand around for long. Found a few more.

First pic P.alutacea from yesterday a bit closer today. The rest were all coming out of one pile of horse poo.

Do they feel like mycenae or hypholoma to the touch? Or like a libbish tiny cyan..? Image 3 is gorgeous, showcasing the sporulated fruitbody and bugs moving the tissues around, and a nice healthy return of fruits. Cycle of mycelium and all that, I can dig it. Image 4 for the rotten mature going back into the biomass to feed the mycelium and make it stronger and so forth. While being devoured. I kind of enjoy seeing blackened fruits in patches. It means everyone's getting some, and more. So cool and so well done.

They have a gelatinous pellicle that's quite thick like P.semilanceata. Hypholoma, the common one we get here doesn't feel slimy. When I touch them as buttons they feel dry to the touch. They look like P.subaeruginosa. Mycena the ones I've touched felt drier.
I'm certain I've picked liberty caps or the closest thing to them in Qld. These have that same feel. It feels slimy like say Protostropharia semiglobata but there isn't that glutinous covering on P.alutacea or P.semilanceata.
This species drops its spores late. Long after the cap has opened up. So a fruit body that has dropped spores is quite old. I've repeatedly tried to print young fresh fruit bodies but the old ones that look past it always leave a much darker print. Thanks Lemon Hope:cool:

I should add I'm taking pics of P.alutacea because there aren't enough photos of them on the internet. I'm interested in studying them more for their interesting life cycle. They don't interest me as an entheogen this time of the year.  I'd need that many and it seems a shame to kill every Psilocybe species I find.

Given their frequent fruiting after any decent rain their spores can go far and wide I hope. Then come Autumn when they are literally on every pile of horse manure next door I'll pick them and try 50grams wet or 5g dry. They probably will surprise me. :mushroom2::laugh:

Went next door today. 99% of the P.alutacea had dried out. So I grabbed a handful of dried ones attached to horse dung. Pic 2- before. Pic 3- 35 minutes later.

Rehydrated like there sporting a"Cat 7-frame piston pump" If you cut into a piece of the dung. Is it full of mycelium?
