The P.Papuana are so photogenic. I'm pretty confident I've never encountered them here in SA. I'm sure you'd sniff them out if they grew here! I might go for a drive to NSW mid January and hunt the forests for a week or so. Inspirational thread!

Well I'll have to retract my statement about conditions being favourable. I can't find any. I snapped a pic of the bunch from the other day. This time a little more in focus.

"Beautiful" Those are some really cool mushrooms & I hope the new year brings us more than this one has. Peace & Love

Thank you very much.

Found a little trio of the rarer light pheno of P.papuana. These are in the same place as where I found them four weeks ago.

Usually when I pick P.papuana specimens I try not to bruise their stem. Yesterday with the light coloured ones I tugged at their stems all together and couldn't get them out of the ground. So I picked them one at a time. Hence they suffered being bruised heavily on the stem.

Looking at the last photo from yesterday the bluing looks black. Probably from the way I picked them. Normally the bluing starts at the mycelium. A grey blue at first. Later a black blue.

Last night I took a few pics under a bright light. Then this morning I took two more. I'll leave it up to you the viewer to decide if they are a bluing Psilocybe species by their bluing reaction.

Nice series of images Heyowana, it's certainly a blueing Psilocybe.
It's probably too late but maybe try making a spore print next time you find fresh samples, I have a suspicion that these may be sterile, if it is indeed a form of P. papuana it seems to lack some of the pigments of the typical specimens, maybe leucistic.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I have spore printed others last season. I sent a specimen to you. Sorry about the photos lightening everything. The gills are the same hue as the darker P.papuana. What I'm starting to wonder about is the cap. The shape and texture of the cap on these light specimens looks different to me.

The dark P.papuana have a dry cap. These I'm not so sure about. They probably are the same species or very closely related. Thanks for the feedback because I really appreciate your viewpoint.

A matter of perspective. I actually love both your photography and detailed descriptions of your finds particularly as a visual thinker. This and your Liberty Cap Allies thread are part of the reason I'm making the trip over. I have some ideas where to start in theory but no experience there. Will post up a thread so as not to further detract from yours. Ofcourse any advice there would be welcome if you feel fit.:bow2:

I'd like to work out why P.semilanceata doesn't grow here when I have found identical mushrooms both here and FNQld That match the description. The temp thing isn't that important as previous UK seasons have shown. They have occurred after heatwave conditions there. Same in FNQ. Monsoonal conditions would occur at 700m dropping about 6inches to a foot of rain.

Then they'd be there killing off the couch grass because they were thick. Well as I said they were introduced to this state via car tyres. Maybe one off but who knows. Lately I'm thinking who cares. If you're interested then that is good.

Can't find much info about P.neoxalapensis occurring in Tasmania. Looks like a candidate for P.papuana:laugh:

Found some P.papuana today. Plenty were dried out from the heatwave conditions here.

Some more pics of P.papuana at the same locations today.

Last image a little container of "mountain meanies." They are mean. Quite hellish in bigger doses as I found out about a month ago. I weighed up around 3g dried of specimens picked last March. Took ages to come on maybe because they were old. Trip had me stuck to the floor feeling like my ribcage was melting with every in breath.

Lots of visuals. Brother tried making me watch some DVD's as I laid there without a thought in my head. Every one looked like devils so I didn't want to watch. Eventually he put on The big bang theory. Sheldon looked like a vampire with pointy satyr's ears. Took about an hour for me to laugh. After that I was coming down. I don't like P.papuana's effect at that dosage. It reminds me of too many meanies or a big trip on coastal subaeruginosa. Not that pleasant. Prefer the euphoric effect of P.tasmaniana even if it isn't as potent.:mushroom2::heart:

Pics too dark. I went down and snapped a few more pics at the same location this time with the flash. I noticed that there were some fresh fruit bodies coming out where the old dried up ones were.

Since the pics yesterday I have watered this spot twice. Looks too dry for these fruitings to survive otherwise. With any luck there will be a carpet of P.papuana at this spot soon.

The greens on the cap margins of the third, fifth and eighth pic are beautiful.

Those meltdown P.cyanescens have to be tried to be believed. I've had nothing that can match them for sheer paranoia at 6g dried. Lucky you. Thank you for that. It means a lot to me.:mushroom2:
