Light and dark pheno P.papuana specimens today. When the light ones are more common I'll send both light and dark phenotypes to alvalab and see what DNA sequencing has to say about these mushrooms.

Nice one Heyowana
I have now learnt that P. papuana will colonise partly decomposed wood.

Cool and makes a lot of sense. Often I find the fruiting bodies near logs and decomposed wood. Both places I find them are near old log dumps where logging was done about four years ago.

Last image a bunch from the other day that were drying out with the hot dry weather.

Did you send this for sequencing yet? I'm interested to see how it will compare with sequences from P. caerulescens

Not yet. Pablo Alvarado said to send two specimens of each last time with P.tasmaniana and P.alutacea. So next time the light phenos come up I'll get two light and two dark specimens.
I was thinking if you could get hold of any hardwood sawdust it might be useful in the medium for colonisation. First spot I found P.papuana they were all fruiting where wood off mainly, Blue gums and Tallow woods had been sawn. Even the second spot with the large dark specimens of P.papuana would have sawdust throughout the soil. Most consistent place is about fifteen foot below where the logs were sawn.
I was thinking it's the wettest but my best finds have come from there and a drier spot at the same distance from where all the sawing was going on. As I go down the bulldozed track they appear as well on the bulldozed mounds of red clay. No doubt there is a lot of organic debris of wood , bark and leaves mixed in these mounds as well.

Yes and a lot of hail as well. Drying out now so more rain is needed for P.papuana to fruit again.
Thanks Anglerfish.

I wonder if Victoria gets some of these species that are being reported in NSW... does anyone know from experience?

As far as my limited knowledge goes. P.alutacea here and Southern NSW. South Australia and Western Australia as well. Also New Zealand. P.tasmaniana here and New Zealand. P.papuana here, the Blue mountains and Woolongong I think.
I'm sure you'd find them in Victoria. Just need to get a different species I.D. working in your mind. Then check out choice habitats. P.tasmaniana - Growing on barks and sticks that have been submerged in mud in wet areas. Occuring in clearings in Eucalypt forests. In N.Z. wood chip habitats I think.
P.alutacea - growing on horse manure here. It needs to be at least 3 months old. Best where the horse manure has been sitting in run offs and depressions. Also in the Summer months some shade is needed for them to fruit. More full sun is tolerated in Winter. In S.A. P.alutacea grows on Kangaroo dung. See Bobwastaken's excellent photos in the S.A. active season's thread. In W.A. on Horse dung. See thread by Mycoelement.
P.papuana - Red clay soil here. Where water has sat or been running over it. Usually near logs. Especially where leaf litter, rotten wood and bark has been covering the ground. Mycelium always attacked to red clay soil underneath the debris however. If you look back to my "Liberty cap allies fruiting in Australia in Summer" thread. Inski gives links to other threads where they were found in NSW. It's around the time he first makes an ID of P.papuana for this species. I was calling them dark cap Psilocybe species before this.
Also occurs in grasses where sawdust has accumulated from logging operations.
Hope you get out there and find some of these species. Or something entirely new. Happy hunting

Thanks , here's a couple of P.papuana from today. Scored 84mm of storm rain over the last three days. Conditions look favourable to find more.

Thank you and may you have a happy and prosperous New Year.
Well I'll have to retract my statement about conditions being favourable. I can't find any. I snapped a pic of the bunch from the other day. This time a little more in focus.
