inski may I clarify one thing with you?
With shrooms, there's 2 basic types: wood lovers and dung lovers.
P. papuana doesn't fall within either of these correct and is in a 3rd category, terricolous or clay lover?
Without clay P. papuana won't thrive or just won't be as robust?

P.papuana grows on red clay soil where water has pooled or has ran over. It fruits very well on steep bulldozed banks of red clay. Also in crevices and holes dug by animals. I have found a cluster growing in bush dirt with little clay in it. This seems to be an exception so far.

Beautiful specimens. I'd almost give up my 'not taking any more magic mushrooms philosophy' to try those. They look so fresh and potent.

Damn that's a sexy tub inski It's interesting they don't blue very much and OP says they are extremely potent. I always thought very blue meant more readily available psilocin was present. Those are spectacular! Man did they side pin too

Wild specimens blue a blue/black colour as soon as they are picked. From the base of the stem upwards. I'm sure Inski's cultivated specimens would do the same with handling. Anyway we'll find out someday.
I think P.papuana is fairly high in psilocin due to their bluing reaction. Unless wild specimens are damaged or old they only seem to show blue around the cap margin or on the stem nearer to the base.
When picked they can turn blue/black over the whole mushroom within the space of six hours say.

Looking at these specimens I can see that blue/black colour mixed in along the striations of the cap. It also looks present along the cap margin with some specimens.
They don't bruise that familiar comic book blue colour.

Hi Bagels
P.papuana specimen coming up where I last found them in June. After drought we scored 140mm of rain over the last three weeks. Hope there are more to come.

I was looking at fallen trees with the red dirt/clay attached to their roots. Some are over six feet in height with moss and ferns growing on them. I'd imagine that trees falling along a water course like this could be a suitable habitat for P.papuana to fruit.
Very dry again so I'll be waiting for more rain to test out my theory.

Hi NothingsChanged. All the best for the PNW cyan season. Have you tried ovoids yet? How would you rate azures compared to cyans?
I have 5 gold cap P.papuana prints that I took last April. They are too old I think so I'll try a little experiment with them. I found a fallen tree yesterday that looks like its roots would make a good habitat for P.papuana. There are little holes in amongst the roots and clay attached to them.
So I'll wipe the prints off in different holes and see what happens. There are different mosses growing on the clay so it looks like it would stay wet enough. I'll take some pics after I've done it for reference and post them here. Spraying spores around has not worked for me. Perhaps a more concentrated mass of spores may?

Fallen tree roots covered in red clay/dirt.
Next five images - one spore print per spot. So if they are viable and like these conditions they might be fruiting here next April.

When P.papuana fruits again where I have already found them I'll transplant little clumps of fruiting bodies to different fallen tree root masses. Then hope for future fruitful seasons.

Hi. Haven't tried ovoid. azure definitely potent, the feeling very similar to the cyans. Don't want to go over board thats for sure. Early snow this year making for a not very good picking season in my part of WA state. Good luck with your spore experiment.
