What region of NSW are they generally based?

I may be able to find some area-places/ Paddocks that are fruiting.

And already have some in mind... I just don't know enough about them.. -to judge whether to hunt certain areas or not*

By their cold weather tolerance I'd say they would be widespread over the wetter areas of NSW. Best places to look are in ditches where water has sat along with horse dung. Otherwise in runoff gullies providing there is horse manure there. Near trees where there are lots of leaves underneath the horse poo.

They fruit on old horse manure, not the fresh stuff.

If you are ever up Coffs way maybe I could show you the way to other pastures.

That's interesting about all the horse paddocks. I used to live out Galston at one stage. We had friends out Glenorie with horses. Kenthurst too I seem to remember lots of horses. It would be worth a look. I used to just go to cow paddocks when I lived in Sydney and search for meanies out St Albans.

Living in Sydney with all those subaeruginosa in so much of the bushland you probably would be better concentrating on them. They are better than the ones up here. They are better than the ones out the blue mountains as well.

That used to get me. Go down a creek in suburban Sydney in that shale country. One of the most potent psilocybes are there. At the bottom of peoples gardens etc that border on a creek. If you know where to look they are everywhere.

Actually there was a species of Datura that use to grow in those horse paddocks out Glenorie. Datura ferox. The long spined Datura. If you aren't into Datura like most sane rational people out there that's the one to try. It's really low in those tropane alkaloids.

I used to put a couple of leaves in my oolong tea and get CEV. I'm going off track again.  A shroomerite was telling me that Bellingen is good for P.cubensis. I like the Clarence river system because it's so vast. You don't have to worry about farmers.

If you do get the chance to look in some horse paddocks Fractaliopsybe one pile of horse dung could give you enough P.alutacea to trip off if its been very wet in Autumn.

I lived out Wisemans for a few years. Years before that a friend drops in one day and says there's goldtops everywhere out there. I question him further and he's talking about golden tops aka P.subaeruginosa. He was right as I found out one day.

I was getting some work done on my car so had to wait around in town for a couple of hours. Go for a walk in the park and see some Wandering jew down where the water has been at a higher flood mark. There they are all popping out of the Wandering jew.

On the road out to St Albans you go past a tiny little township after the road makes a right hand bend about 5 minutes up the road from the ferry. That's where I used to live.
Anyway after that it isn't far to the cow paddocks. From the start of them all the way out to St Albans is meanie country. I knew nothing about P.alutacea when I lived there. Could be worth a look if you know where horses are. I used to see some horses in the paddocks around St Albans.

Gotta go now and join  mushroom observer to make an observation for P.alutacea and P.papuana.

Good luck. If your up this way sometime and any of the species this thread is about are fruiting I'll take you on a guided tour. That's if you have the time.

I've created a mushroomobserver.org observation for P.alutacea.It's MO 246781.
Alan Rockefeller was going to post sequencing details when I did it. So now it's done.

I'll do P.papuana tomorrow. My computer took forever to upload the photos.

Cool.:mushroom2: Even if there isn't much around, that don't matter with P.alutacea. Just pick up some horse poo nuggets add water and wait. Then you see their true magic.

Few pics from today.2nd image same one from yesterday more hydrated.

if I find just plain horse manure, maybe a spore spray may work...?

Some of the horse dung I find where the P.alutacea has been fruiting is literally saturated in spores. They fruit each time it rains and drop spores all over it. So get some of those nuggets wet them and presto P.alutacea.

I thought they could work to spread P.alutacea around if it isn't already. Easier than spores because each nugget of horse dung is a little self contained casing full of mycelium as NothingsChanged pointed out.

I keep thinking those Golden meanies I saw one August on sheep manure many years ago were the same species. They looked identical. Maybe sheep manure boosts potency:laugh:
Most of the P.alutacea in the photos today were shrivelled up a couple of days ago. When they are fresh they are brightly coloured. The ones that keep regenerating when it rains go darker and brownish. They would be interesting to cultivate to ensure that they were all fresh specimens. I think that's why I found them more potent in April. They were everywhere on the horse manure. There was probably a good percentage of fresh new ones because of the ideal conditions.

Thank you very much knarkkorven. The horse manure where these are fruiting is getting very old now. Close to 12 months old. I was thinking what will happen when its too old because the horses haven't been up there since.

In a paddock close by where the horse go frequently I finally found some P.alutacea last weekend. So I don't have to worry. Most of it is too fresh so I need to look around a lot for older horse dung. I'm sure in time they will fruit well in that paddock where there is some tree cover.
