Can I leave the Red/green pieces in WBS?

Hello everyone. Prepping wild bird seed for the first time. Very excited. Lots of floaters. Lots.... No fish net. Sifting by hand is taking forever but I'm not in a rush so no biggie...
There's quite a few Red and green chunks of something mixed in with it, not floating. Okay to leave them?
Thanks!

IMO it's okay to leave everything in there, including floaters.

I just spent literally an hour picking out floaters by hand lol. Looks like I lost about a third of my mix to floaters. Maybe a quarter of it. Will take note next time. Thanks

I've never seen that argument made, but I don't agree with it. Your target species wants the same nutrients as most of the heavyweight contaminants. Bacteria, yeast, mold--all of them want a source of carbohydrates, the same as whatever is in your spore syringe. Some other contaminants can make use of them, but TBH I don't think the risk of a Schizophyllum or Pleurotus contamination is increased by leaving in floaters, and even if it were I don't think it would be worth spending an hour pulling out floaters.

I use a wire mesh mini strainer to scoop out sunflower seeds and other floaters...takes all of a couple minutes....that being said....the few sunflower seeds that make it past this "screening" never caused a problem in the grain jar.

Yeah you shouldn't have bought WBS with little pieces like that. Those aren't even grains. They're like.. kibble for birds basically. Shit will go soggy and ruin your spawn.

Just grabbed a handful of the soaking seed, and there's ALOT of these pieces. Was gonna try to pick em out but the hell with it. Will take longer than going to Kroger and buying fresh seed.

Maybe some cool colored birds will come around. That'd be neat.
All my Walmart has is this wild harvest shit. And if I remember correctly, it all had those things in it. I'll try my local grocery stores or dollar store.
Thanks for the help by the way. Glad I asked or I'd have used it anyway.

Wal mart very very like Y carries Pennington's wild bird seed, it's good...has a little cracked corn... Ace hardware's has a ton of cracked corn
Kroger's in my experience is the very best, and I know Kroger brand is sold in mom and pop and smaller grocery chains across the nation.

This is why I like to buy each grain separately... so there's no guessing what you're getting. If I found anything but wheat in my wheat I'd get my money back.

Seems like smaller more generic stores would have "less" quality bird seed, meaning less additives. I guess the big stores and brands add all the crap because it's "good" for birds. Getting ready to dress little man and run to the grocery stores here in town. I have a Kroger about 45 minutes away. Will go there tomorrow if I don't find anything.

Would southern states (farm store down south) have just millet or some kind of seed without anything else? I'm a city boy. Went there to buy cow poo once and they looked at me like I had three eyes...
