When using a PC, is it supposed to whistle extremely loudly?

I just got a new Presto 01781 pressure cooker and one it hits 15psi, it starts to whistle EXTREMELY loudly from one of the valves. Is this normal? It's like scary loud.

It's not a hiss, it's a VERY loud whistle.

Have you figured out where it's whistling at? Gasket, safety plug, pressure gauge or the rocker?

I believe it is the safety plug, labeled "top."

I generally chill next to the PC until I see steam escaping from that thing and then I use a paper towel to hold it down for 10 seconds to build pressure. When you release the paper towel it should pop up and start building pressure on the gauge.
Will make video later.

Yes that's the safety plug (overpressure plug). Sounds defective. You could try spinning it so it seats in a different position, and/or lubing it with Vaseline. If neither of those work, go out and buy one. They're hella cheap. Like $10 on Amazon. If this is brand new, you can probably get it free with warranty.

I think I may have figured it out, let me know if this sounds right.
I think I was setting my stove too high and the pressure gauge was being slow to register the psi in the cooker. So when it hit 20 psi and triggered the whistle, the gauge registered at 15. Just a guess, because I tried again and this time lowered the flame and let the pressure build slower and it's no longer whistling when it hits 15.

Weird. Lol for me it doesn't make any noise until the bitch pops. Then it sounds like a shotgun just went off.. steam everywhere.. water all over the roof, the stove, the floor, the counters, the kitchen table 6 feet away... so annoying when it happens

Are you saying it was close to popping in my face? Well, that's terrifying.

Take pics, because the only thing that says top on mine is the silver valve, not the little black emergency pressure releif .

O I thought that was called a safety plug. It's the silver valve that whistled.

.... What?? Pretty sure you didn't get that from the manual.

It's an analog gauge. It does not have lag.
