Growing in a big contaner opposed to jars?
    #2350202 - 02/18/04 12:49 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

How can I do this? Could I pressure cook jars with rye and just pour all of them in a big container (which I've washed clean with all types of sterilizing products... which one is the best by the way?) and yeah just pour the rye in there and innoculate it. This means the whole proceess will be growing in the terrarium container... could this work and how?

Use quart jars with wbs or straight millet, or any other grain for that matter.

Do some searches for filter patch bags or similar.

you could get BIG Turkey oven bags and PC Rye in them, then take two Qt jars fully colonized Rye dump into bag (inside a glove box) tie not in the bag let colonized then take several of these BIG bags and dump into your big container.

:smile:Yeah... that sounds good.  Though I wouldnt necesserally need a glove box when the cakes are fully colonized, or is it really that important?  And when I dump the colonized substrate from the bag into the container is the colonized substrate loose enough to fill out the container fairly even or will they be rock hard and bag shaped?

you want the glovebox so your not getting air born contams into the sterilized bag. I would just skip a step (which also cuts down on air exposure for less chance of contamination) and innoculate into a sterilized bag.

I read that fully colonized cakes can usually handle some handling, but not too much handling. If I'm wrong then I'm fucked, yesterday I picked my cake up (with bare but clean hands) and put into a terrarium which I thouroughly cleaned... it looks ok so far... hope nothing happens.
Anyway, ok, ofcoruse I could just innoculate the PC turkey bags, but what about airing? Should I tie a know at all then or punch small holes...or...? My guess is I could keep a small opening in the bag and keep the bag some place with little air is still. WHat do you think?

it will not be rock hard but a little bag shaped. wear gloves and just break it up. grain breaks up easy.

colonized cakes can handle a little touching. colonized cakes are harder to contam because the competint fungus has no available nutrients to feed on. It has already been colonized and claimed by the mycellium.

As for airing out an oven bag...I can't say cause I've never tried! The safest thing I could think of would be to order some micron magic filter patches and tape them onto the bags. A slightly cheaper option would be to try to make a tyvec section on the bag to shoot through.

You probably wouldn't NEED anything. Just tie the knott and you should get SOME air moving in and out...

cool... allright.  Thanks for all of the help
A make up patch... round piece of cotton... whatever you call it would work as a filter I'm hoping.  If nobody advices me not to then this is what I will try.  Peace.

Just make sure your innocuant and asceptic conditions are not in question so you know what went wrong if that bag contams. :smirk:

have fun!

Uhh... couldnt you just stick some polyfil in the end and put a rubberband around the opening holding the polyfil in place on the bag?... then you could also inoculate through the polyfil!
