Do poppy stems snap easily during windy days?
    #23507797 - 08/03/16 10:45 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Is it necessary to use sticks to support them?

Are you sure the stem snapped op? Was it at the bottom of the plant? If im not mistaken, poppies have what youd call a joint i guess at the bottom of the stem to help support the weight of the pod. It causes the plant to lean.

Actually i dont grow, the reason I ask is because I've seen people using bamboo sticks when they grow them.

Usually they lay down. Sometimes they stand back up.

How long do they take from seeds to flower?

Depends on sewing season if early autumn sowing 12-14weeks but plants are smaller. Late winter early spring there a bit quicker by a few weeks and larger.

They're strong, in fact plants that are grown from seed outdoors will toughen up their stem from the constant barrage of wind, which pushed the plant back and forth, strengthening the stem.  You can see this easily on many plants which are grown from seed, with the part of the stem closest to the soil getting more fibrous and tough compared to other parts of the stem.

This one guy I knew years ago used to pinch his cannabis plants when they were very young, this created a knot type joint in the stem, which he claimed allowed the plant to move more nutrients up the plant once it healed.  I don't know if there's any truth to that, but his plants looked great.

What would the evolutionary advantage be for a plant to not be able to hold its seed bearing part up?
