Agar question...
    #23506542 - 08/03/16 05:23 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I have a few pre pour agar petri dishes that I don't see myself using. petri dishes are a little iffy compared to jars with agar in them. Here's my question. Is there any way to transfer my agar from the petri dishes to the jars? Can I simply cut out the agar put it into the jars a want them in and PC them to perfection?

Well you could do that, no reason it won't work other than it might get a touch caramelized. But is the power use and time worth the 5 cents in agar? Your call.

Not in my country unfortunately. I also can't buy coir from gardening centers so I'm stuck with peat

Edit:
Just searched for coir online I can get an 11 pound compressed brick for 20 bucks.
I wonder how big that would be...

Any local health food or vegan store will sell agar powder very cheap. 2oz cost around 7$ no need to have it mailed to you if you want to go buy it now....

I've never seen coir in a gardening center necessarily, at least not an orthodox one... pet stores and hydroponic shops though.

I get those telephone agar-agar packets for like 50 cents each. Asian food store FTW.

Does your country have pet stores that carry things for reptiles? You should be able to find coir there.

I may give that a shot. Any brand names I should keep an eye out for?

I live in the US.
I usually get the 'exo terra' or 'eco-earth' brands. Tho, if I have a choice, I go for exo terra.

Yup I'm completely fucked I think.
Searched for reptile bedding. All they had was $25 coarse coconut chips and other types of mulch. No coconut fibers. If I order online I can get a 11 lb brick shipped to my house for $20 though so that may be an option in the future.
Also I checked my nearest health food store and the price for 25g of agar agar flakes is $11

That is outrageous.  Surely you can order a few of the telephone agar packets everybody else is getting.  Dunno how much shipping would be but, cheaper than a brick of coir.

Health food stores are a freaking rip off. That really sucks. Next time ya got some cash order a pile of powder agar off the net and bite the bullet on shipping I guess. I hate searching the Asian supermarkets anyways so when I by powder agar I get 30 packs or so.

Yup that will have to be the way to go. I'll have to order a lifetime supply and pay for shipping haha. For now my 50g bag will have to do as I enter agar territory.
