Im gunna do some searches. How much is in an average "brick" of coir? I can order 11 lbs of coir for about 20 bucks online. I feel like that would be a rediculous amount of coir though

You aren't checking the right pet stores...you need to go to a privately owned Animal store...the kind that would sell exotic lizards/snakes...not a dog store,

most store workers have no idea what they got on their shelves. you can try asking for reptile bedding, that's usually coir. 1 brick = 650g

Thanks guys you rock! Found a pet store today with a brick of coconut fiber. They said they just got it in today, coincidentally. I told them to keep it in stock haha.

make sure its the right thing, though! coconut fiber can be is different than coco coir. some "coconut fiber" is actual long pieces of coco fiber-hair things.. at least im pretty sure. i almost got that instead of actual coir, at first.

To jump back to the discussion on the previous page, straw will tend to grow mold easier if not cased right after spawning. As for the peat, you should still definitely keep that for your casings, peat>coir when it comes to casings IME.

I have enough faith in you to trust you can see the difference between a compressed coir brick and a big bag of loose coir fibers
supa, straw shouldn't mold without a casing layer, are you sure you're chopping them finely enough and dont have strands sticking out of the sub?

That's what I mean, the ones that stick out take too long for the mycelium to reach it and will go moldy rather quickly, even less than the 2 week window we are so accustomed to preach about. I chop my straw pretty finely

I still get a bunch of them sticking out unless I case it right after spawning. For the sake of accuracy, I'm referring to a straight straw tub, poo mixed in with straw will hold it down much better as well as make it more contam resistant IME. I still prefer to case right after spawning when using straw, better safe than sorry.
I notice that the straws that stick out of the sub and go moldy will normally end up drying up and the tub will still perform. Still, I'm not too comfortable having live mold millimetres away from a bulk sub, dry or not. Casing it is an easy and quick fix, which you will end up doing anyway.
