Millenials have less sex than previous generations did at their age * 2
    #23503759 - 08/02/16 10:30 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/aug/02/less-sex-please-were-millennials-study?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=twt_b-gdnnews#link_time=1470171485

While a decline in sexual activity is not in and of itself a problem, it may be symptomatic of a problem. What, then, is the cause of the decline in sexual activity, and is it a problem?

Is pornography to blame? Are people simply to lazy to pursue sex because they're satisfied with masturbating? Or is it more complicated than that? Have young people become more insecure about themselves because of pop-culture glamorization of extreme ideal forms of masculinity and femininity, and thus less likely to pursue sex? Have peoples' standards for both themselves and others become unrealistic because of these popculture portrayals of ideal forms of masculinity and femininity?

Men are told that this is what sexy looks like:

Likewise, women are told that this is what sexy looks like:
Quote:

Is it any wonder if young men and women either feel that they don't measure up, or that the potential matches don't meet their standards?

Have people become more afraid to have sex than they formerly were because of diseases or the potential burden of child support payments (in the case of men), or shaming from their peers and family (in the case of women)?

Is young peoples' behavior driven by false perceptions about the opposite gender, perpetuated by cultural myths and reinforced by an inner dialogue of self-justification?

I think it's a combination of the these factors, and possibly others.

To what ends are we speculating? It depends on the kind of question. Sometimes we speculate about systemic problems that appear to have systematic solutions and therefore seek legislative answers. Other times we speculate about systemic problems that don't appear to have systematic solutions and therefore seek personal answers. If, for example, it turns out that there exists a state of systemic insecurity associated with unrealistic standards for oneself and others, the answer would appear to be to reject those standards that give rise to that insecurity.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

I haven't had sex for 1.5 years.  The last one was a beached whale that didn't have tits or ass either.

Damn close to a 400 pounder too

There's more mentally ill people than ever before, people being treated, not being treated. You're not really interested in having sex if you're depressed. .. and the garbage they dole out does the complete opposite of what they're advertised to do

Yes. But, many have a hard time with it. Not to mention that obesity directly effects the sex drive as well. It's not like the main reason, just another contributing factor.

Sure, I guess, but the point is, why should everyone be subsconsciously forced from a young age to measure themselves against an arbitrary standard of health?

Being THAT muscular isn't really "healthier" in and of itself than just having a normal amount of muscle mass.

Why should everyone have this idea that they need to look like that or else they're not attractive?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going the "body acceptance" route that like, we should encourage people to embrace being obese. But this is me for example:

Maybe I am wrong, but I consider myself to be pretty healthy. I honestly, sincerely do not believe that simply by putting on more muscle mass and eliminating a few percent more body fat, I would become that much more healthy.

I am pretty confident about the way that I look but I like even guys who are just, you know, skinny and don't have much muscle mass at all, but who are healthy, why should feel insecure about the way they look just because hollywood plasters up these photos of ripped dudes all the time and sends the message: "THIS IS WHAT SEXY LOOKS LIKE"

And don't try to tell me that is an objective understanding of sexy. 100 years ago, being muscular just made people assume you did hard labor for a living, and it was all about being as pale as possible, and 500 years ago fat was sexy because it meant rich.

is it an MAOI? Most antidepressants decrease libido. That actually could be a major contributor, since so many people take them these days, especially young people- I hadn't thought about that.

from what i understand its related to cathinones

Welbutrin

and also, if you get healthy, you WILL look good. it's not exactly a bad thing to encourage.

Healthy IS sexy.

The super skinny dudes and the overweight folks simply aren't healthy. maybe that's why it's not a encouraged body type.

I don't believe the whole thing is a result of media portrayals of the 'ideal' body types. We've always had a cultural standard for beauty, it changes all the time. Shit, the past few years the number of women with amazing asses that I've seen has gone through the roof. I think that's due to social media. I think it can really motivate men and women to get into the gym.

......And I don't think encouraging people to embrace their poor health and body weight is constructive...not at all.....
:triggered:

If I had to guess I would say it's due to the internet. So many of us are glued to our phones/laptops/pc's for such large portions of the day that a lot of people would rather stay in and catch up on Game of Thrones, play video games or beat off. With so much high quality entertainment at our fingertips, the real world can seem inferior at times.

I think it is great to encourage people to work out and get in shape. But I think it's important for people to know that they don't need to feel insecure if they don't have a six pack or the perfect breast/waist/ass ratio

I agree, but you can get pretty close. and honestly once you start, you'll probably want to continue and then all those hours in the gym won't feel like an obligation but rather an exciting journey in self-improvement.

I am a fuckin heroin addict and i still hit the gym regularly. there's no excuse. I was close to 200lbs on my short frame from just smoking spice and drinking beer. i decided enough was enough and im down to 160.

I guess my point is that those are healthy role models for me.

the role models for women are considerably more dangerous since they don't necessarily have to work for that and in fact many are at a calorie defecit and not in good condition.

Female athletes would be better or any models who also workout and don't just look malnurished.

the beauty standards for men, though hard to attain, are at least based in hard work.

I think body shaming is wrong though, of any kind.

But I think at some point, if they're dissatisfied with their sex lives, they'll need to come to terms with the fact that most people don't find obesity attractive. You can't expect the rest of the population to just change what visual traits their hormones respond to.

If you are overweight then building muscle will most certainly make you healthier.

it will relieve stress on your joints and increase the amount of fat you burn even while at rest.

If you are not overweight then i'd say, yea you are probably fine. Of course increasing your lean muscle mass will always be a plus as long as it's within your natural limits(ie:no steroids)

It's not just sex. Millenials these days are shunning all sorts of hedonism. They're partying far less, they take drugs far less, and they also drink far less than previous generations.

I think millenials these days are finding satisfaction in gaming and internet and shit like Pokemon Go, whereas generations of previous eras had to find other ways to pass the time.

Something similar happened to Japan with the tech boom. Now men have a robot girlfriend app instead of getting one in real-life.

There's actually a funny joke I heard the other day.

"What did our parents do to kill time before the internet?" I asked my 21 brothers and sisters and they had no clue either.

For me growing up, i was afraid to have sex for a few reasons.

One reason was i was a die hard romantic. I wanted to be in love then lose my virginity. I wanted it to be special.

Then one day in my 20's i said "fuck it" and went thru with it when i was presented the chance to do it. Thats when i realised i shouldnt have held back for so long, i had many many missed chances for sex :nonono: If only i could go back in time to change it all.....

A lot of insecurity i had back in high school. I felt like my personality was lame compared to other guys. My body wasnt great, but really it was my personality that i was unhappy about. I wasnt good at socializing so i didnt take risks that i should with ladies. Low self confidence is a crippling state of mind to be in....

Ha, for me I had the opposite reaction. I was a nerd in high school and pretty much a social outcast. I couldn't get a date to save my life, and I knew this.

So I didn't bother saving my virginity for anybody special, because I knew there was no way in hell I could convince any guy to go out on a date with me.

But at the same time, there was no way I was going to stay a virgin till college, because fuck dude, I'm a teenager and I have hormones pulsating and throbbing through every inch of my body. I was very determined to lose my virginity as quickly as I could, to pretty much anybody.

Since I could only get guys who didn't know me to go out with me or fuck me, I scoured other schools and the internet for guys my age. Lost my virginity at 15 to some random guy online.

We were both the same age, he went to Irvine High. Half Asian/half White (I don't remember if he was half Japanese or half Chinese?)

But he was BEAUTIFUL. Soooo gorgeous. There's no way in hell I could have gotten a guy hot as that at MY school. If it weren't for the fact that he was terrible in bed, I would have ended up dating him and brought him to my school to show him off.

Just goes to show you that social class hierarchy in high school is pretty much all bullshit. None of the guys would touch me at my school, but other guys who didn't go to that school were just fine seeing me.

Damn, at 15? really early

I know about that high school hierarchy. There was the uber pretty Vs the normal/ugly crowd.

I knew some 15 year olds who were very horny. Me included. I surprized i kept my virginity in my teens cause i was a total perv.

physically, i cannot look like that male example in OP.  i don't have enough weight, and i have incredibly long, lean muscle.  my body is *almost* in top physical shape.  that's all i can expect and am completely satisfied.  i can perform work that many others cannot, and for long periods of time.

i would lean towards cultural (pop-culture, especially) conditioning playing a large factor in the issue presented

it's a hard pill to swallow but we are in a sad state of affairs when men would rather spend time with silicon dolls and virtual anime girls than actual women.

With soaring divorce rates and the loss of modesty, it's hard to blame them.

and on the other side of that spectrum, women simply aren't interested in me who have chosen to "opt-out" of the society. Which is really just an excuse for them to feed their media addictions.

Somehow i manage to crawl out of my hovel and score some tail every now and then. i think drugs play a big role. if i didn't do drugs i'd probably never leave my computer desk.

Not hard for me to believe. The period of time right between the birth control pill being invented, to the first years of the aids crisis were probably some really sexual years in history.

It's those god damn cellphones. 100% sure it's the phones.

- You can't talk to anyone anymore, they have earbuds on all the time
- When they don't have their earphones on, they're looking down at their screens
- Nobody talks on the pone anymore. It's all texting, no actual speech.
- Tinder gives you a sense that you deserve a 10 and that you can swipe away 9s or lower
- You don't need human interaction anymore, you google everything
- Plus of course, porn...

No wonder people are fucking less. 20 years ago our population was on the decline because the boomers didn't have a many kids as their parents. Imagine 20 years from now. The only growth will come through immigration and I bet they won't be fucking much more than us either. Good for overpopulation I guess.

The phones have programmed kids to receive immediate and regular rewards through games especially design to do that. Getting sex is a long process that requires effort, therefore they say screw that and they jerk off.

When you look at the numbers you'll see that there are now more singles than couples in most modern countries. Like I said earlier. Tinder and shit. They give you the illusion of choice, therefore people don't compromise anymore. They see a fault and they walk away

Then again I can't complain. I'm selfishly single myself because I don't like to compromise and I can't seem to be able to develop a connecion with people. I'm part of the problem I guess.

And then the people who do have sex, %99 percent of the time it happens because they get wasted so that they can feel less in order to have sex.

It's pathetic. People are so alienated that they have to tranquilize themselves to do what comes naturally. And then it's sloppy, drunk sex. Probably with some random person. Or someone you wouldn't normally have sex with.

I fucking hate college. I need to start spreading this MDMA I've got on me around my college campus. No one does good drugs at my school.

i remember in 2013 when methylone was the "molly" going around everywhere i knew a group of morons that went through an ounch of the stuff between a group of like 10 or some shit at shitty Bisco one year.

it's a good thing they were taking shitty methylone and not MDMA because they would probably have gotten some lasting brain damage that weekend if they even survived.

i'm not much for rolling either, i think it's cool that there's tons of real MDMA around the past year nd two compared to before tho.

my experience is that millenials have fewer people having sex but the fewer people are having more of it than people used to.  if that makes sense.  so the redistribution of sex actually balances out

Going to a coffee shop or anywhere basically, it's like nobody actually talks face to face. Just groups of people all on their phones and tablets. Too much technology. You need face to face personal communication before anything happens so not too surprising.

Idk if I believe this or not. I'm 21 and have had plenty of sex.

If anything it's the men's fault, or rather this feminized society making men less confident and would rather watch porn than talk to real women. They probably all believe the bullshit that if you touch or talk to a woman you get accused of rape or something absurd.

Truth is, if you are attractive, you can say the most arrogant shit to a woman and still fuck the shit out of her. So just be attractive?

When asking this question, which generation(s) are you comparing millennials to?  Some of the past generations in recent memory were just as widely subjected to their own standards of beauty, and some of those standards might not have been that different from those today.

If you want an answer to this you should ask what is different about today than yesterday.

Another interesting fact about Millenials is they have on average weaker gripping power due to their high tech jobs that require little strenght.

But of course, mayb millenials have labor jobs so its relative

This should really fall into the "no shit" category.

Much of it overlaps with Generation X Which came as a result of the Baby Boomers.

There was a reason they were called that, you know :V

Also, AIDS.

maybe the prevalence of STD's and the HPV thing too. I think most of the issues brought up have always existed, but the change in STD's could really have something to do with less people wanting to find partners just to have sex? I may be wrong.

Younger generation needs instant gratification, noone wants to go on the hunt for tail anymore and expect it to be handed to them. also the huge expectations that alot of younger people have in accordance to looks and style. noone just likes people for who they are it seems. I just want to be in a genuine honest relationship. hard to find it seems.

I'm actually taking this young woman out on an actual date this Saturday. Something our generation would find queer. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

The skill of seduction has been lost in this new generation. Used to be you had to actually have social skills to meet sex partners. Now you just get online and browse profiles.

Nothing wrong with beating the meat once in a while to get a release but watching porn and wanking off daily or multiple times daily just for fun is definitely detrimental.

I met my husband online.  Through a group chat site.

Met online a few years ago. Actually met up over a year ago..

We never really "dated".. Anyway our sex life is plentiful so I disagree with blaming the internet.

It's bound to be a combination of things. .
We have no way of knowing if it's less than generations before recording statistics.

People are now on more prescription medication than ever before.

More people are obese.

More people are educated.

People are over worked,  at a job that's often a  hour if not longer away.

People eat shittier food, leaving them lethargic.

Sex isn't taboo and secretive. It's perfectly ok to discuss sex positions and to enjoy it.
Maybe the lure of the forbidden fruit isn't there anymore?

Speaking of Feminist stuff...

I've noticed in the past few months, as I've been becoming much more outgoing with people in my daily life, making new friends, making conversation with people in general more often... That whenever I even speak to a female who is around my age, they and other people automatically assume that I have my eyes set on this person and desperately want to have sex with them.

It's crazy. Even at my job, there's this really beautiful girl that I work with. There are a lot of guys that work there that are around her and my age. None of them talk to her unless they absolutely need something from her. All other men who are much older than us talk to her because apparently that's okay since they obviously are much less likely to try to have sex with her.

But apparently a guy (me) talking to a girl (girl I work with) means I'm some kind of horn-dog trying to 'take advantage' of some woman.

I think the thing is that I'm more confident with myself in general than most of the other guys there. Not bragging or anything. It's just obvious that that's the way it is. So they take my confidence with myself as being some kind of "I can fuck any woman I want and she will be mine" kind of attitude.

When I actually see it the other way... The reason I like speaking to a lot of women I see in general is not because I want to have sex with them. But because I'm just comfortable with myself enough to do so. Meaning I'm probably talking to some other girl already anyway (I am) or dating someone at the time.

It's weird how that works out... It's like people project their own insecurities onto you because you like making conversation with somebody, when actually the reason you're talking to her is because you aren't interested in her in that way.

Fucking lame-asses.

Sorry. Had to vent.

Yeah man, I mean, I can still get hard and finish when I watch porn, but that dopamine rush I used to feel is gone. These days, when going through a dry spell (which is rare, thank god for girlfriends), I will usually just wait until I can't take it anymore and some fantasy while I'm trying to sleep will push me over the edge, haha.
It's just so much better when you can share it with someone, and getting used to porn as your sole source of sexual stimulation definitely deminishes the drive to go out and look for a real girl (or man or whatever). It also increases my social anxiety like tenfold.

Some scientists have said it all has to do with spending too much time engaged with one's devices ( phone ) during early developmental stages. Some peeps lose the ability to be confident in the kind of intimate physicality required to have sex. It's very little to do with "body image" at all. It's how their brains have become de-humanized (?) through constant reactivity to artificial computer/electronically generated data of all types, social media is actually just punching keys .

I would NOT have kids today no matter what! Hell I never had them anyway. All you parents/soon to be parents/new parents are VERY brave and I applaud you for having the guts to have kids. Good luck!

I also think it is because of the tech causing a disconnect in the way humans interact with each other. I have seen people at bars on the fucking device "talking" to someone they want to meet??? WTAF is that shit!!!???:confused::sad::scat:

Do you guys think the whole 'Technology =antisocial' thing will rise as we go into the future?

One thing that I'm optimistic about is Virtual-Reality.

I know Facebook bought the Oculus-Rift and is planning to create some kind of Immersive Interactive environment that you can talk to and hang out with your friends in while wearing VR equipment.

That would seem to have a positive-benefit of being able to see your friends "In-person" in a way, and use body-language whenever you want to talk to your friends at home, instead of just typing words onto a screen or skype or whatever.

Some people see it as a further step towards de-humanization. I think though that it could be on the whole, a positive thing. I think that something like immersive VR environments, especially in combination with a full-body detection camera and gloves would even encourage people to get out more since it's actually closer to reality and less distant from reality than just sending text back-and-forth.

Eh?

Encounters in person are the way of socializing our brains are shaped for.
While I would agree with your stance that sophisticated VR contact is closer to reality than texting, I somehow can't deny that it is, in a way, a step towards de-humanization in that it is just another way of communicating without face-to-face contact.
It won't motivate people to go out more.
And that's where you get laid.
Demolition Man comes to mind.

Is fifteen early? I consider it average. Some kids these days lose their virginity at age 9 or some shit.

Well. It is at least closer to face to face communication. It is face to face communication in a way. Especially when you get to Eye-Tracking equipment, which is already being made today.

The main reason I feel that it would encourage people to be more social in real life, and "getting laid" more, is that if you just think about it... Imagine if every day when a group of friends were in their homes... They decided to get on their VR equipment and hang out in a virtual space. They have Head-Mounted-Displays (with eye-tracking eventually for eye contact and head-motion detection), cameras around their bedroom to detect walking motion (or a circular treadmill for in-place walking that doesn't take up room), and gloves or whatever other clothing or apparatus to detect body-motion.

These friends can communicate with each other in a space together with body motion, face-to-face eye contact, and will obviously want to use microphones to speak to each other while in the space.

Compare this to most kids and young adults going home and texting on a smartphone and logging into facebook to send text to each other.

Obviously, trying to tell everyone to step away from the computer and go outside isn't working, but something that encourages more expression and body language might.

I'm not saying VR will ever be equal to or better than real-life. But surely I think for most people it is way better than the way we currently interact through social-media.

Using different avatars and what not in Virtual-Reality might even encourage people to explore their bodily-communication more creatively, since they won't feel as restrained as in 'real-life'.

Again. Not saying it's necessarily 'as-good' or better than actual real-life socializing. But surely it's better than coming home and Facebooking or texting for hours.

Whats the trend?

Sounds like this is a longitudinal study, maybe there are somewhat "normal" ebbs and flows in the data.

I think the most cut and dry answer is we have more shit available to us then they ever did. Aside from books and grainy black and white tv with a grand total of 2 channels and no sound. Fucking was literally the most exciting thing they had available to them.

Shit roll the fatties my way I'm down.

Big women are gorgeous. All women are beautiful and all but busty babes and curves.. it's a shame people body shame them because TBH I love that little extra cushion. Especially when they're proud of their size and dress well and do themselves up. I can't get down with a 105lb woman. Larger women with confidence are A+

If, for example, it turns out that there exists a state of systemic insecurity associated with unrealistic standards for oneself and others, the answer would appear to be to reject those standards that give rise to that insecurity.

Golden.

We're asking about the emerging value system, why people ( in this case young people ) seek the things they seek, and the methods in which they go about finding it. It has becoming increasingly difficult to know what other people really think about life because the broadest spectrum of electronic communication, the media, displays only that which serve the purposes of a bunch of billy bumblers festooned with delusions of grandeur.

I didn't read the article, I'm simply responding to your thoughts and questions.

But I feel that if it is impossible to find the epicenter of a point of tension, the best way to address it is by working from the outside in, alleviating the tension by finding gradual solutions as we work towards the core.

So on this topic, I think you've hit the nail on the head by outlining a few problems at large: pornography, photoshoped idol worship, unrealistic expectations, but there's more too. These are all peripheral causes for the central axis of a lack of self- esteem and this:

There's a disconnection from our mother, the Earth, within the ego of many people these days. They do not 'think' about the connection we all have with each other and the Earth, and simply act out of an abstracted sense of self, boiled down to a narrow kernel of all that we are.

And so from this point of view, of course it's easy to manipulate someone's mind with imagery and comfort. Get rich, marry this gorgeous sex-doll ( man or woman, whatever ), and go sailing on a yacht drinking champagne and farting in your swim trunks all day, these are the ideas programmed into our idea of 'happiness', but of course none of these things are essential for true happiness.

So where do we begin? If the epicenter is too tough and tight, then I think we can begin simply by rekindling our natural, inner spark ( many of you and myself already have done this ) and healing ourselves and others by giving everything we have to gradually changing the scene on a cultural, quantum and personal level. This is a lot of work, an immense undertaking, and it must be done carefully and with tact as to remember the purpose for enacting change in the first place. It's not to set up a new regime, but to reopen the doors which have been closed by long days and nights of material suffering.

Seriously doubt it's less with the advent of birth control making it much simpler to just stick it in.  :cookiemonster: glory days! I feel for generations past.

maybe the prevalence of STD's and the HPV thing too.

Dude, pretty much everyone has had HPV. I think it's like 60% of the population.

You might as well get it, as long as it isn't the bad kind (warts). You are a lot less likely to get that bad kind if you do.

Just like herpes, if you get cold sores on your mouth you are 3X more likely not to get the bad kind.

Usually HPV people get and their immune system just fights it off. I probably had it because my boyfriend said he tested positive for it.

I didn't care.

The skill of seduction has been lost in this new generation. Used to be you had to actually have social skills to meet sex partners. Now you just get online and browse profiles.

Yeah, but when you're dealing with subs in the new internet generation it's awesome.

They are only used to online shit and then it's like "What, you're doing this in person? In front of my friends?"

Lol, scientists.

How much can I get paid to point out the obvious?

Okay, I'll shut up.

I'm creeping myself out because no I really didn't make anything up.

I thought about this a long goddam time ago.
