Psilocybe azurescens outdoor cultivation 4

The purpose of this document is to link to the available information on the net about the cultivation of Psilocybe azurescens and similar species (Psilocybe cyanescens and related species)
Psilocybe azurescens
Psilocybe cyanescens
The outdoor cultivation of Psilocybe azurescens is somewhat more complicated than that of Psilocybe cubensis, on the other hand it is easier in some aspects since major parts of the cultivation are done outdoors by mother nature.
The requirement for a successful outdoor fruiting is that you live in the correct climate, the Autumns should be cold and moist. Check this document for a listing of the climate zones that make the cultivation of woodlovers possible.
All of the woodloving species mentioned above follow essentially the same cultivation requirements.
The cultivation consists of the following 3 steps: 1. Germination of spores on agar -> Transfer of colonized agar to grains OR 1a. Direct inoculation with spores using a spore syringe on either a PF cake or grains 2. Transfer of the colonized grain or pf cake to pasteurized or sterilized soaked woodchips. (particularly suitable are smoke chips, beech or alder) 3. Colonized woodchips are used to inoculate an outdoor woodchips bed located in a shady spot in spring. Best are fresh woodchips from deciduous trees(alder, beech, poplar..but any other deciduous wood will work) also spruce and Douglas fir. Dried, soaked woodchips also work. The bed is kept moist throughout the summer, and in September - December a fruiting occurs.
The most accumulated info on cultivation of Psilocybe azurescens can be found at Sporeworks (click on the images to see the individual grow reports), a very good document also at MushMush.
Time line for the cultivation of Psilocybe azurescens January, February: Grain spawn preparation.
February, March: Grain spawn transfer to sterilized wood chips.
March, April, Mai (as soon the snow melts): Colonized wood chips to outdoor wood chips beds.
October, November, December Fruiting
Once you have an established patch, you can simply add fresh woodchips to the patch every year and thus extend its lifetime for years.

It doesn't matter if the ground freezes solid during the winter, does it?

No, it doesn?t matter , here in Austria the winter temperatures go up to - 20?C for short periods of time, usually it's around 0?C for about 3 months in winter.

This could be a bit short, depends on how well the summer conditions are. If you water the bed well in the summer it could be that you are lucky, but there is no guarantee. If it doesn?t fruit the first year, it will likely fruit the second.
