Just a newbie sharing my first growing experience :)

Hey guys, I wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I was a lurker and finally decided to sign up to greet all you fine people. I'm a first time grower and just started growing using the BRF Tek. I inoculated 6 jars about 4 days ago and all 6 are starting to show some mycelium growth as of today. I bought B+ syringes from a shroomery vendor, and bought the pre-made/pre-sterilized jars from Midwest grow kits.
I've read on these forums that doing the TEK's from scratch is much cheaper and effective, but I figured trying out from Midwest might be easier for me for my first go. No complaints so far, and the inoculation phase was pretty simple, I'm sure fruiting will be fun
I'll try and take some pictures to show you guys, here in a little bit.
(Also wasn't sure where to post this introduction, hope I did it in the right place. If not, please moderator pass this thread to the correct place)

This post should be in the cultivation section if I'm not mistaken. Regardless, cool stuff man! Always good to see a new member! Happy Shrooming. And make sure to post photos of the "fruits" of your labour!

Thank you for moving my post, I apologize, I wasn't sure where to post it. Thanks for the support I'm very excited about growing, I plan on doing a shotgun FC. Only thing I'm concerned about is that I take tramadol, a low dose, 100mg (daily). After researching that Tramadol and Shrooms dont mix, I plan to taper off the pills so that I can have a decent experience during my first trip.
Anyways, any tips for a new grower? :P

Did you buy the midwest grow kit? if you did you got a lot of problems headed your way. I did the same thing over a year ago. Lots of frustration and waste of money. Those are the wrong size jars. You want the HALF PINT WIDE MOUTH. Those jars tend to stall Myc growth due too their tall tubular shape. This happened to me.
Good luck.
Oh and btw their oven door inoculation method, works as a convection. It doesnt push contams out but rather pulls them in. I tested this with a agar plate. Move to a Still Air Box next time.

I hear ya, Well I figured I'd give it a shot with midwest, if it doesn't work out I'll definitely try it out from scratch. Yeah, the oven inoculation seemed sketchy. So I created my own inoculation box out of cardboard, and flame sterilized the needle and alcohol wipes. Maybe, I'll be one of the few that has a successful grow using midwest, hopefully.
Also if it does stall is there anything I can do about it? Or just wait it out?

Yeah you'll regret it. This will be a good lesson to you that you can't cut corners in mycology like it was to me. If the jars stall out your screwed there's nothing you can do about it.

the best & most innovative feature of the PF Tek is the verm filter/barrier. This is the 1/2" of verm that sits on top of the brf mixture in the jar. This is why you can have open holes, because it is tough for mold & bact to get through the verm to the nutritious BRF cake. I'm not sure how you keep that fragile setup through the mail.
certainly a good learning experience, and maybe you will get enough fruits for you to bang out your first experience.
best of luck!!

I hope so , When I received it all, the jars were bubble wrapped tightly. Everything seemed intact, the verm layer and all. I'm sure it being bounced around maybe impacted it a bit... We'll see though, I'll post pictures throughout the weeks and keep you guys posted. Even if it fails or not.

i wouldnt say that..
while i dont condone buying premade stuff, you can still get some mushrooms, even if the jars stall. I actually had tall jars stall before, after hitting about 80-90%. if this does happen to your jars, just rinse off the uncolonized sub and dunk/roll/SGFC as per usual. They may not even stall.
But i agree, next time, just DIY. its really simple, will cost much less money, and you will have much better results. I also agree to make a SAB. since you did do the oven door method, like that kit suggests, combined with the fact that your jars were premade and shipped to you, these are pretty much gonna be hit or miss. if they contam, then toss them and DIY. if not, then that's great, but still DIY or the next.
good luck.

Thank you for the information, but yes, as I said earlier I didn't do the oven method. I did make a SAB out of cardboard and followed the sterilization procedures. Even if 5 fail and 1 jar makes it, I'd be happy to have at least somewhat succeeded in this experiment. Even if they all 6 succeeded I will still plan to do it myself, I'm curious about the procedures and it will be a good learning experience.
If majority of the jars do succeed is there a preferred way (after birthing) to sterilize the jars for future attempts? Maybe using a dishwasher?

oh, sorry i missed that.
and after youre done with the jars, you just need to wash them out in the sink. or dishwasher works. a dishwasher does not sterilize, though
then, if you want to use them again for DIY, just load them up with the brf sub and then PC them. there are tons of teks for it. watch the first 4 vids on www.mushroomvideos.com, and check out The Basics for a really great start.

wow, brf-cakes with dry verm barrier shipped through the mail? You know you're not supposed to mess with your cakes much at all after sterilization right?
I'd start a new project right away, from scratch, try to find 250mL / half pint jars that are about as wide as they are tall.
Your old jars gets sterilized next time you use them, along with the brf+verm mix.

yeah, thats what that vndor does. premade sub in tall half pints with verm layer, which undoubtedly gets shifted during the shipping.. even thought the verm layer is to the lid, it still isnt realizable. my first grow was from them, and about half contam'd literally a day after inoc, so im pretty sure the verm layer failed.. plus it was sorta moist, which is probably another reason it got moldy. the verm layer was the first thing to get contam with those jars.
the ones that survived were likely fairly bacterial, too. still got a decent yield, but DIY is so much better.
OH, and OP, i forgot to say, like space said, i would go ahead and try to find wide half pints, instead of using those tall ones again. even when i did DIY and used those tall ones, a few of my jars still stalled. this hasnt happened since i got wide ones, though.

Okay sounds good, thanks for all the good info. I'll go to my local wally mart and get some of those wider jars
Ironically, I have no vermiculite to dunk and roll them during the birthing process, So I was planning on getting everything to do the BRF tek anyways :P
