I kinda want a lab "small business"
    #23502547 - 08/02/16 04:48 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Anyone ever manage/own a small business? I was thinking it would be very cool to own a winery or mushroom nursery/dispensary. Maybe even an independent network administrator and remote assistance/advisor. I'm not really entirely sure where to begin though. I was thinking I may just start some tomato seeds a month before spring and keep them alive with my T5 and try to see seedlings for $1 each, and then when next summer comes around I can attempt to sell some of my english walnuts (as seeds) and hopefully that will be enough funds for a new ID and a business license. Though then comes other expenses, such as a place to rent that I can store numerous greenhouses for mushroom production, and maybe a license to sell agriculture. I imagine that's not permitted without an additional fee. Plus I'd like to label them organic, but that's another fee.

Sorry for the run-on paragraph, just got a lot on my mind. Would like to be my own boss and feel more independent.

Any advice on getting started with agricultural distribution? How do I get my foot in the door without a degree?

I often think about trying to dig myself out of a money pit.  Starting a business is not so easy when looking at the cold hard facts.  Unless you are starting cannabis your not going to make more than $4 a tomato seedling.  There are some mature walnut tree's out where I do a little labor but they are getting blight.  Walnut oil and walnuts are a hard nut to crack.  These are black walnuts.

I'd take out a loan if I thought I could get one. I imagine my credit has been swept through the mud after wellsfargo starting hitting my account up with charges for not having money in the account after they stole it and hit my with a charge for not having it.

Not sure exactly what I'd be investing in though.

It's funny how banks have stolen from me more than anyone in the world and it's not considered criminal.

The medical establishment has taken a lot from me.  They seem to be giving to me pretty good anymore.

If you have a hard time with money do not start a business.  Don't spend money you don't have in expectation of receiving more than you spent.  I dream a lot too and it's hard to make reality work for us!

Can relate. They held me hostage for two days in the wrong hospital and then forced me to travel by ambulance to a facility across the street, which they ended up charging me $1200 for, and then I had to stay at the other facility for 24 hours until they tried to trick me into signing a paper that said that I consented to being held an additional 2 weeks. :facepalm3:

The whole system is fucked and rigged.

It's that I know I could handle and perform better than these people under a dose of LSD.  They wouldn't be able to see strait!

I question the make up of their existence.  There are just too damn many rules!  Cannot run a business out of a house, cannot grow a damn tomato plant in the front yard.  No problem with reasonably dealing with specific complaints but the shit is piled up in books.

Unfortunately we didn't inherit a profitable spectrum of 'the way it is'.

I think it would be cool to distill essential oils.  That's something that's attracted me and has a high mark up.

Bring it up on your local ballot, I think it's like $200 to add something to it. We legalized it in 2007 I believe. Nobody really does though because they're selfish. Except a few latinos and asians.

I live in a surprisingly strong Republican strong hold for the Midwest.  There might be a lot of these around.  Lot's of people with old money!

A lot of what?
Why's it relevant?

laws governing selling agricultural products (as food) vary from state to state, and within that individual municipalities.  often this depends on scale of the operation and output/revenue collected.

as far as selling starts, that is way easier to stay under the table since you are not directly selling a food product.  i'm not sure where you are, but where i am, english walnuts cannot be raised outright and must be grafted (often to black walnut).  lots of people are too lazy or careless to raise plants from seed, especially more "sensitive" plants like peppers, eggplants, melons, etc...

when you mention your wells-fargo account, i imagine you're talking about a checking account.  checking accounts have no bearing on your credit rating unless a line of credit is attributed to it.  do you have any prior credit accounts (i.e. credit card, loans, etc...)?  if not, you may not even have any credit.  if you don't already have credit, i highly recommend you start building it NOW.  not tomorrow, NOW.  it's virtually impossible to build a business without credit.

it sounds like you need some focus/direction.  look around your area at what competition already exists.  pay attention to any niches that aren't being fulfilled

I may open a Golden1 account, I hear good things. Then hopefully I can start selling something to generate some income to pay off any debt I may be in, and then proceed from there. I could start the walnut tress here and ship them, but the shipping is ridiculous and I'm not sure how I would package those. The walnuts seemed a bit more practical as I would basically pick up the matured ones from the ground and just mail them in a bubble mailer. I would do spore prints if it was legal in my state. Most people just go to the store and buy traditional mushrooms, they don't wanna learn how to grow them.

The only way I imagine I could capitalize in that marketplace is to distribute bulk or try to team up with someone here making edible culture syringes.

Walnuts take a long time to produce.  My apple tree's should get a few apples soon but they take 15 years to flower.  That is why they say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.  The next best time is now.

Try to find a produce auction.  Even buying cheaply and setting up a roadside stand with permission can make money.  I know of a WWII vet that passed that started that way and turned into a grocery store, made 100 million!

Sounds legit. I once helped my late grandfather setup his auction tables. He was trying to sell sports cards and some other random crap. I don't think he paid much for the spot either. Next time I go I'll have to look around to see if anyone is certified or licensed. Might get some pointers.

There is a produce and livestock auction in a nearby county.  The Amish pretty much run the show.  If only we could auction our home grown drugs there, I'd rule the roost!

There's a lot of growers here. Tons of competition. If I had kept a ghost pepper plant going inside last year I'd have cashed out from this local salsa business. The frost killed my plants though.
