Oyster log in sgfc

I have a few months of experience with cubes now, and I am so excited about growing all kinds of edibles too! I got a pretty colonized oyster log (even though I also have spores and stuff to start from scratch). I was wondering if I could put it in my sgfc next to some pf tek cakes of psilocybe, or is there some kind of Spore interactions between the two that should be avoided? Don't know if that's a thing or not. Also, wouldn't it be advisable to cut many slits in the plastic around the log to create more pinning points? The instructions say to just open one end and let it fruits from that end. Any help appreciated!!

You need tons of fresh air for oysters, a SGFC won't even begin to cut it.
Because an oyster log is huge compared to a brf cake they fruit okay without a fruiting chamber, they don't dry out nearly as quick.
Normally you would put slits in the log, having the end of the log fully open will dry it out faster. Depends on the species/size of the log though.

Alright, thanks man. I found out the hard way lol. I actually tossed the log yesterday but I got my very first home made oyster straw block at 90% colonization, so this time I'll get it right. Its about the size of a cinder block, but not quite as long. I did it in a spawn bag with a filter patch but I'm about to buy some polytubing for next time. I Was going to cut like 4 slits on the biggest, frontal face of the block, about 2-3 inches long. I was wondering tho, how WIDE should slits be? Just the width of the razor, or do you open it up more?

Usually half to three quarter inch slit is fine. They will push out of a small opening. Make a tent over top of bag with some plastic. Make it loose so there is air between and mist often . When pins start to develop remove plastic tent ,mist often.

Alright man, thanks for the info. Here's the straw block I made will probably be ready Saturday. I actually already have small holes for ge. Like 8 tiny slits all over. So I guess I can just unwrap it and put in the light. They're blue oysters btw. So, I just need to try to mist inside the slits, then?

By "unwrap it" I mean it's wrapped in a cotton sheet to keep out light.

Hey Russk, are those knots forming in the second pic? Pasteurized or sterilized? Looks good.

Right on. You can also supplement straw with alfalfa cubes or pellets (among a ton of other things)for added yield and better fruit. This is what I was referring to in the lower left of your second pic. Could just be an optical illusion but looks like knotting to me.

Just mist the block to raise the humidity around it. Fruiting = high humidity + fresh air + light + temperature

OK so I was just about to post a pic of this block because it looks really strange to me. Why are they sooo tiny?? At first I just cut slots and left top closed, but then decide to open the top and tape all over the slits except for this one. I was misting many times a day with the top open, but then put a humidity tent over, now just have to mist a few times. But, do these look like normal blue oyster??

Yep,, they need 12 hrs of light. Light will turn pins blue then fade to grey or white. You need to leave plastic tent off now for fresh air and mist often as possible. Looking good!

Awesome. I got the day off and the block in the living room, so she's getting lots of mist today. Haven't started turning blue yet. I'll post pics when done

I see you've cut the top of the plastic off. Be careful not to get the substrate too wet. I don't see pins on top . You can leave loose plastic tent on the top . Just keep the pins uncovered and misted.

I guess these are done?? I expected them to be so much bigger. But the caps are beginning to curl up, so I guess that's it for this flush. Just a whole bunch of Itty bitties. They smell awesome tho. Probably sautee them tonight. Here is what's going on with the opening on top....
