Promoting the genetic engineering forum
    #23501342 - 08/02/16 10:22 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/299

I created this forum awhile ago. I just wanted some feedback from the scientific community on what works with the forum and what doesn't. Could it be improved? How so?

If not, what do you like about it? In what ways is genetic engineering positive and in what ways is it negative?

I like the forum, though there is a distinct lack of activity. I personally see absolutely no issues with GMOs, and in many cases (golden rice) support GMO proliferation. More nutrition per acre is never a bad thing for countries that have continuous issues with malnutrition (which, at this point, is every single country on the planet...including the US).

My only concern is the idea of intellectual property and how it relates to GMOs. I do believe that the terminator genes included in many GMOs (Monsanto!) is a good thing, for fear of a super-powered invasive species. I don't think GMOs should just be allowed to run wild and compete with native flora. I do not believe that this should be leveraged into forced seed sales, however. Even if you designed the organism, I don't think you have the right to literally own it. It's a living thing, it has its own agency, no matter how insignificant. Not a great example, but I treat my cat as I would any other human being that has the mind of a two-year-old child. Because that is roughly the mental capacity of a housecat. To me, my cat is still a living being with its own agenda and agency, and I will not stand in the way of such, except to not let my cat outside. Domesticated cats are little eco-terrorists because they hunt for sport exclusively, which is not something I condone. Of course, this means that I set up my own little hunting/sporting arenas for my cat, and take time out of my day to make sure that they are properly entertained and exercised.

So yeah. GMOs are awesome. We need more and better GMOs. If you design a tree that grows chili, and I don't mean peppers, I mean like the whole meat-beans-rice-veggies chili, I will pay you lots of money to put one in my yard. I will literally pick myself a chili-fruit for every meal of the day. All of my concerns with GMOs primarily revolve around intellectual property, and I'm not enough of a legal scholar to speak with authority on the matter.

It may also be relevant that I don't consider actual gene editing different from selective breeding. We, as humans, have been doing selective breeding for millennia, and will continue to do so for likely the full extent of the future of humanity. Direct gene editing simply lets us accomplish the same things much faster.

We indeed have been doing selective breeding for centuries.

You are right as well about thinking that life forms should not be patented. Selective genetic engineering does not seem so bad if it seems that god gave us the ability to selectively engineer life. Life though is life, I don't think we can play god and selectively engineer life then patent the life forms.

It's a pretty special interest inside a special interest group. You are going to have that problem and since the majority of people interested in the subject probably won't register to a drug forum you'll have a lack of activity. I'd recommend either joining a genetic engineering forum outside of here or making your own that you market to the broad public.

Are the genetic engineering forums that exist one sided? Do they have debatable forums or are they only siding with the promotion or destruction of the concept? One thing I enjoy about the shroomery, despite the amount of one side one mind people here that seem to turn every topic into a real life drama way beyond the realm of joking, is the fact that socially the shroomery really mixes it up. People here really drive up their point to the max, creating a huge differentiation in points of views on one topic.

Do I expect more participation about a subject such as genetic engineering that splits off the concept of genetic biological chemistry here? Rightfully speaking, many people who are members here have degrees in similar fields of biochemistry. You'd think a topic such as a "genetically modified plant" would have fascinating value in face value. Is such the case? Not necessarily.

Thanks for your input though, I hope you understand what I'm saying.

I'm inclined to agree. For being a "drug forum", the shroomery has a healthy membership of people that either don't care about or don't prioritize drug use. There are many echo chambers on the internet where you can go and find people saying the same thing as you. It is a testament to the skill of the operators/moderators of the shroomery that I don't consider this to be an echo chamber. There truly is a huge mix of ideas that are discussed here, and the vast majority of the posts I see here are not little "yeah, you're right!" circle jerks that are common to many other subject specific forums.

I lurked here for years before signing up for an account, and lurked some more with my account before I started actively posting. During this extensive lurking, I did my best to get a feel for the community, because my biggest concern was hanging a "come visit me, popo!" sign on my IP address. I think this community is diverse and expansive enough that even something as specialized as a genetic engineering forum will find a solid base of visitors.

Oh yeah, I agree. It doesn't affect outside stigma though.
