Hesitant on putting holes in fruiting chamber

Hi all. Im unsure whether to put holes in the chamber. I live in thailand and we have an open style house. Im concerned about bugs especially ants getting into the chamber. Any ideas. I presume sticking with the self fanning method would be fine but because of the climate could get to hot between fanning

If you are planning on a monotub, the holes will be stuffed with polyfil which will keep bugs out.
I do tubs in a similar climate. Mine are outside and occasionally rodents will be attracted to the grain spawn. They'll pull the polyfil and climb inside.
Insects shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah man, your mushies need fae. Unless you just want to grow mycelium or contams.

Cool how about making the holes small and filling it with cotton wool?

Synthetic fiber is what we use. Polyfil. Used for pillow stuffing .

Monotubs are an easy way to cultivate. I never mist or fan. In your humid environment, fresh air exchange is going to be critical.
I have tried holes from 1" to 2". My favorite tubs are the ones with the 1" to 1 1/2" holes. 1 1/4" is the sweet spot for me. 2" feels too big. I don't enjoy putting polyfil in holes that large.

Could'nt you do 1/4 inch and just make more holes?

Yes. I have done that as well. It is called a SGFC (shotgun fruiting chamber because it looks like it got blasted by a scattergun).
Hard to beat a monotub for ease and performance.
Try them all out and then you'll have a preference.
Get out your drill and get after it

What do you guys think about putting micro pore tape over the holes in the SGFC?

I personally wouldn't. Why would you really?

That you'll be restricting air flow hard core.

Wow that sounds so gay. Bugs love coming in through the lid, but I'm talking about little mushroom flies.

I was thinking maybe the tape would allow Fae but also hold in a bit of moisture. Probably would help with contam right?

Restricting fae is about the worst thing you can do about contams.
Humidity is like way down the list of priorities. Priorities in order are PROPER surface hydration of mycelium, FAE, humidity, light, temperature.

Yeah I agree with Mad Season. If you built your SGFC to spec then humidity should not be a problem. I think using micropore tape kind of defeats the purpose of an SGFC. It needs to breath man.

I didn't think the tape restricted the fae, but I hear you guys. What is the reason people use polyfil?

It severely restricts fae mate. A sgfc was made how it is for a reason
Poly is used on mono style fruiting chambers

Appreciate the words of wisdom guys. What do you prefer, sgfc or mono?

well are you doing pf tek brf cakes or spawning grains to bulk? SGFC for cakes and Mono for bulk, usualy.

I decided to start with rye because that is what McKenna's book recommends. My rye berries are near full colonization and I am planning to do something with coir for the substrate. I'm not sure about the coir though. Do I even need to add anything to the rye or can I just put the berries in, case, and wait for fruits.

yeah, you want to spawn them to a bulk sub. like CVG. look at the links in The Basics, epscially under "Teks for doing bulk grows". this should get you started off well.

Thanks mupetmower, that's a great link fo sure. Shroomery has such a great community. It is really refreshing that I'm not alone in this venture.
