Hey guys, check out my colonized book
Used rye grain colonized with Golden Teacher spores and an old Tom Clancy novel hollowed out packed it full of colonized rye. Not sure why the pages are turning orange, not contaminated I'm assuming it must be from the rye or maybe myc piss? Anywho shant be much longer till it fruits!

Watch out for that myc piss. It's a huge pain if you don't get it outside in time, shit just pisses all over and of course it's me who has to clean that shit up.
Btw the term is metabolites. A secretion for digestion and its immune system for other competitors. Piss is waste product. Very different.

Oh ok, so the orange is nothing to worry about then? It's my first book grow so I never noticed the orange (metabolites? right?) before.

usually means there is some bacteria or other contam present.
cool idea, though

Nah I'm 99.999999999999% positive there are no contams, smells like musrooms no feet smell or nasty smell present, no suspicious colors like green pink or black/grey, the mycelium seems to grow where ever the orange is present. Maybe it has to work hard because of the paper ink or chemicals? Anywho it's looking and smelling great, very aggressive growth.

99.9999999999999% of the time, bacteria doesnt smell like anything. and it can be hidden, and meshed in with the myc. you can use smell to confirm bacteria/contam but not to disprove it.
look up why metabolites usually happen. not saying your grow is fucked.. bacteria doesnt always fuck your entire grow. but it can diminish your yield a bit. and it can leave an opening for contmas/molds to come in.

I will look into it, if it fruits funny I'll know for sure. Idk how it could be contams though I was 100% steril and used a glove box and the works. It seems everywhere the orange goes mycelium develops. I would think it would look less white or something or grow slower. Anyway I'm no expert but these are just my observations. Personally I think the orange is being caused by the myc somehow seeing as the orange coloring and myc growth happen at the same time and the orange does not spread without the myc and visa versa.

bacteria doesnt always mean that your myc/mushrooms wont grow at all.. the fruits that do grow can even still be completely healthy(if given the proper conditions, etc). metabolites usually show up when the myc is stressed/fighting something like some bacteria. like i said, its not the end of the grow, or anything. it usually happens from having some bacteria in your spawn.
also, you may want to research SAB and use one instead of a glovebox. they are usually better to use over a glovebox.
either way, im interested in seeing how this book will do

Fruits funny?

This substrate is bacterial as fuck. Can you tell because it fruited funny?
In your opinion you were 100% sterile.. did you inoculate with agar? If not right off the bat you weren't sterile.

Yeah I inoculated the rye grain with agar before packing it in the book after it was colonized. I meant everything that I did and worked with was sterile. By fruits funny I meant showing signs of disease like blackened dead spots on the caps or something. Like I said I'm no expert, I still have plenty to learn all I can do is observe and absorb information.

Well that would be a misting/humidity/low fae problem if the fruits are all weird and diseased looking. Substrate bacteria just lowers performance and makes things much more susceptible to mold.
