Does a little rust potentially contaminate Substrate Jars for BRF PF-Tek?
    #23499413 - 08/01/16 06:53 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

First time grower here. Lemme explain the situation!

I had 10 substrate jars that I was sterilizing. I used a large cooking pot with a lid (Don't have a PC), and placed spare jar rings at the bottom to prevent my jars from touching the water. I brought the water to a boil and then turned the heat down.

virtually all of the water evaporated by the 30 minute mark cuz the heat was kinda high still, so I took it off the stove, let it cool for a few minutes, then added the appropriate amount of water. I kept it on low-med heat for another 1.5 hours, minimal evaporation this time. Yes, my jars had foil over the lids.

So I let them sterilize in there for a total of about 2 hours (overall), then I turned the stove off and moved the pot off of it. It was like 3 am at this point, so I was very tired. I left my 10 jars in the pot with the lid on to cool down overnight. I forgot to empty the water out of the pot...

So in the morning (9am, so 6 hours overnight) I removed the lid, and the water was brown from the rust that formed on the spare lids separating my jars from the water. So the rings rusted overnight, but not dramatically. 1-10, probably 3-4 in terms of severity.

However, my 10 jars had NO rust on the foil, their lids, anything. They were spotless. I decided to inoculate them immediately. (I had a layer of dry Vermiculite at the top of each jar, as research suggested to do, to protect the substrate from contams. No tape over the holes.

the prior night, I cut 2 holes in a large plastic tub with a lid over it, rubbed the inside down with alcohol pads and had it prepped for the morning.

I wore latex gloves, which I also alcohol padded. I inoculated my jars in this, to go above and beyond to avoid contaminants and air. My jars had 4 holes, and I used 1 cc per jar (0.25 per hole), aimed at the glass. I used a blow torch to sterilize the needle between each jar I inoculated (Since it only took 2 seconds to get it red hot). I know heat kills spores, so the needle was always cool before I injected. I then placed 5 jars in a dark cabinet above my fridge. And the other 5 on a shelf with 12 hours of soft light per day (6500kw bulb). *figured I'd see which yields faster mycelium growth.* *again, no tape over the holes*

Moving on. Is it likely that the rust from the water contaminated any of my jars (No jars were in direct contact with the water)? I'm a little worried, but I'm very willing to learn from my mistakes.

Sorry for all the details, but I figured they will help answer any questions that may go along.

if bacteria and spores cant get in your jar the rust didn't either.
