Does this look fully colonized?
    #23498359 - 08/01/16 01:13 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all. Need some advice. I've done the pf tek and I'm trying to move on to doing bulk. This go round I used:

Syringe of Panama cubes to rye berries
Let that fully colonize, broke it up and added it to my substrate
Substrate is coco pasteurized via the boiling water/bucket tek
Also added vermiculite, gypsum and earthworm casings into the substrate mix
The tray I put this all into is 3.5" deep
I covered it with tinfoil, put very small hole in foil for fae, labeled it, stored it in a storeage tote in a dark closet and checked it 10 days later.
It looks like this. Ready for FC?

Not yet. Looks like it needs for air. I'd poke a few more holes in that foil.

If you fruit it now it's going to continue to colonize for a while before it pins, so I say fruit it now if you want.

Evenly mixed, no casing layer. I'll pop a few more holes and wait it out. Thanks guys!

Well, the tray is covered in tin foil so it's gonna be pretty much in the dark no matter what.

Holes have been poked. Trays moved into my grow room. I'm running 12/12 with a 1000W HPS in that room. The light is behind a double layer white plastic curtain, so it not even close to being in direct light, but it is getting light now. It seems to have helped a lot.

This is the first test tray I opened and y'all said to put in fc and wait it out.

This is one of the trays still under foil in the grow room with new holes in foil and 12/12 indirect lighting.

It looks like the Myc is getting denser with the new changes.

65000k led close and direct would be a better option for fruiting.

1000w HPS?  What the fuck??  That's like, 150x more powerful than you need.  A cheap 2 dollar daylight CFL would outperform the shit out of that.

Wrong color spectrum and everything... just.. wow, wtf.  So much heat being generated by a light like that, you can't even run it without a fan.  Which means you have a TON of moving air going on, which is also terrible for your grow.  Probably getting that room 10 degrees hotter than it needs to be too.

Seriously, talk about swatting a fly with a rocket launcher..

Yup yup. I need to grab that still. HPS and MH is all I have right now though. I'm still very very new to this. The 6500k led is definitely on my wish list on Amazon.

The curtain in this pic closes.

Ambient temps in the room range between 69-72 Fahrenheit. And the lighting is behind a double layered white shower curtain. The light is for my medicine. I put the fc outside of the direct light. It's isolated from direct HPS.

You don't need an LED. Like Ino said just go to Lowes and buy a 6500k CFL you'll get far better results. For two dollars. You don't need an LED from Amazon.

No it's cool, I just don't want OP to wait to have to wait and order something more expensive than he needs when time is ticking. Proper lighting  makes a big difference.

Weird.. all ~10 of my grow bulbs together probably weren't even 15 bucks... why get such an expensive light?  Like, is it even the right color temp?

It says its a blue 6500k on the box. Not sure how well blue lights work. Never used one.

But yeah its excessive, either way.

Ah, yeah, didn't check the box.  6500k is the color temp that's been recommended for mushroom growing for years.  You saying you've never used a 6500k bulb D?

No, I use 6500k.  I assumed it meant the light shined through blue tint. Now I assume it means blue spectrum. Just dug up this post from RR.

RogerRabbit said:
LEDs have shortfalls in spectrum, and their performance is not quite ready for prime time.  When I built the mushroom farm you linked to in the seedstock article, I used LEDs exclusively.  However, it's become apparent over the years that fluorescent lamps around 6500K are the best choice, not LEDs or especially 'blue' LEDs.  I've since removed the LEDs from the farm and all 500 feet of LED light rope is currently coiled up on a pile of straw bales in my barn.

It appears you don't understand the difference between blue light and light in the blue spectrum, which actually appears mostly white to our eyes.  The latter is what we want, and the weight of finished product grown under proper lighting will be double or more the weight of a grow only illuminated for a few minutes a day or even all day with the wrong spectrum.  This is apparent from pictures above from a grow with insufficient lighting.  You can see plenty of mushrooms(they'll pin and grow in total darkness) but they're small and the caps are thin.  Contrast that to monsters with double or even triple the weight when grown with good full-spectrum lighting.

Lighting requirements of mushrooms.

I found the same setup on Amazon and it's nearly 3x as expensive. Is this too much output? I'm reading 6500k is recommended, but this lamp has 4 of those bulbs and the are 4' long each. I've already got it hanging up and used equipment can't be returned. I can still use it for germinating seedlings, if so. Wow this thread went sideways. Lol

Update.

Getting pins on the tray in question. The tray up front was treated with your advice. Second tray looks nice a white. :-) Thanks for the help guys.

Still have 2 back up trays colonizing. I'm waiting for the cakes to finish producing, so other trays are on standby. I'm knocking up 7 qt rye jars today for my second monotub.
