The Coleus Thread
    #23498241 - 08/01/16 12:31 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I have been thinking about starting a thread for coleus for a couple weeks now for people to share pics, have discussions on growing methods ect. After looking around a few other threads I have seen that several others here share my love for the plant and it definitely deserves it's own thread.

Other than being beautiful and very trippy looking they are super easy and fast to grow, propagate easily from cuttings and make excellent house plants. It is so fun growing them from seed and finding that special plant.

I'll start off with a few pics and I hope others share what they have. This is my first time growing them and now I'm hooked.
A few seed grown plants:

Here's a couple that are being grown from cuttings I acquired

I since have taken cuttings from all my favorite seed grown plants and they are slowly taking over my greenhouse lol. I'll take more pics later and hope to see other's beautiful plants and hopefully get those who aren't growing it interested in doing so  :peace:

I have a few types of coleus myself, love them.  What type is the last one in the OP, the one that looks like an opal or something?  That one is outrageous.

Not sure what type that one is but it is one of my favorites. It came from a cutting off a plant that came from lowes.
I'm starting to notice something when rooting cuttings, it seems the color fades a bit. My thoughts are where the plant is lacking nutes until it roots. I'm guessing once they take off good the new leaf sets will gain back their full color.

Hell yeah, you can build a nice collection for free or next to nothing quickly from seed or small cuttings just put in wet soil inside or the shade, but I warn you it can get out of hand fast for these very reasons and if you are like me I can't bring myself to to kill or throw any of them away lol.

Not advocating stealing, but if you see one you like somewhere and pinch a top off  it dosen't hurt the mother plant and actually makes it branch and get fuller.

I Love Coleus:yesnod:
Here are a few of my seeds grown plants.
They sit in individual pots way too long, and I almost lost them all.
They are slowly recovering and regaining some vigor.

Very nice! The ones with the pure white in the middle are awesome.  I don't have a lot of experience with coleus, but one thing I've noticed is seems like they can bounce back from most anything. Had some in small cups that barely got watered and as soon as they got some love they took off.

The leaves of my Coleus turn white for a few days as reaction to a relocation.

Means when I put the plant to another window and probably turn the pot around, the next day the leaves turn white in the middle.

But those spoken about look really nice indeed!

Thanks buddy:cool:

Yeah man,I sowed a rainbow mix seed pack back in the winter, and I got all these varieties!
I left them root bound in pots for quite a while, then I decided to take action and put them in the ground.
They are already looking lots better, and hopefully will get their vibrant colors back like yours:yesnod:

Do the seeds dry onto the plant, or will I have to tie a paper bag onto them after the flower dies off?  Any info would be appreciated.  I'm a total noob to coleus, but am kinda thinking about going ham on them next year, haha.  It's the only plant I grow that has no use besides looking amazing. Well, I have a begonia basket too, but whatever.

I'm too tired to explain how to collect seeds, but this link will tell you how to do it:cool:

http://homeguides.sfgate.com/save-coleus-flower-seeds-65371.html

Yeah,I stopped collecting houseplants, and any plants that only serve as aesthetically pleasing.
I do have a couple of houseplants that I'll bring in for the winter though, but other than that,if I can't eat it,fruits and veggies,or smoke it,like in the case of Cannabis,I have no use for plants that just sit and take up valuable space,no matter how beautiful they may be,minus my coleus, and flower garden,of course, because that stuff will die back, and I don't have to lug it all in for the winter.

This is one of those plants like Klip Dagga,Calea Passion Flower,Wild Lettuce, etc, that people say have psychoactive properties, and can get you high, when they absolutely do not.

It's just a beautiful psychedelic looking plant to stare at.
Other than that it has no use as a drug, medicine or food.

This cultivar is called Saturn.  I got this one when it was a bit sickly, and each picture shows the progression it made, now a healthy plant thanks to fox farms soil/nutes and some love.

Very nice! You are definitely doing something right. I think an actual controlled experiment on clones to figure out all the determining factors of color would be interesting.
Personally I think that good direct light early in the day/morning and a good amount of nutes especially N in the soil is important.
A few of mine have lost some color, I'm not sure why but I did move them so possibly light.

Burk, that seaweed and GA is crazy as well,  I can't find any of the cool varietys, rosy dawn gardens has all types listed but are out of stock of every single thing, ano good local nurserysThe only different looking variety I have is the kiwi fern

Yes, nitrogen is key to keeping them lush and colorful, at least that's my experience with them.  Some cultivars require nothing but shade, others shade filtered light, some can stay colorful in full sun.

I have this book, and if you're serious about Coleus, I recommend buying it, it's amazing.

I need this book!

I would like to also add that Coleus performs best under fluorescent lighting, and it's vibrant colors are really brought out under it!

There are also coleus that prefer shade, some that prefer sun,and some that will only show their true colors in filtered light.

My seed grown ones are sun loving, but when I put them out in the sun,it faded them out and nearly killed them.

Now,they are in mostly shade with filtered light, and are doing better, but the colors are dull, and not vibrant like they should be.

This summer is too hot,and with the depletion of the ozone layer,it's only going to get hotter.

This being said,I have never had a problem growing nay type of Coleus until this season:mad2:

Oh man,I just went out to look at all my Coleus, and they are wilted beyond belief!

I trimmed up my Crape Myrtle at the bottom, and it let the sun hit them all directly.

I reckon they will either adapt,or die.

I'm getting to where I'm sick of all the gardening problems I'm having this year:mad2:

They are tough plants, hopefully they shape up for you. Mine were wilted bad this morning, hot and thirsty. Now that I'm injured and down an arm the wife has been helping which is nice.

Slipped at work, feet came out sideways arm got caught on a stainless steel table pulling it up over my head and shoulder out of socket, after twisting on with no luck had to put me under to get it back in :frown:
I can't even unlock the padlock on the shed, very humbling.

Keep me updated on the plants.

Wow, great score!  I had no idea they had a nickle day, never seen that before so will have to keep an eye out.

Around here you can go to greenhouses and they will have tons of plants which are sickly set out for free, so with proper care you can get a bunch of free plants, and it's fun to nurse them back to health.

Well, there is actually no Nickel day, they were just cleaning out all the plants that didn't sell because of how late it is in the season, and they were selling everything for a Nickel up to a Dollar.

They are also selling stuff cheap at a local plant stand we have here as well.

Thanks for the reply man:thumbup:

Nice, very healthy, I'd hit grandma up for a couple cuttings of that one

Picked this one up from lowes on the cheap, very neglected, it's a flamethrower spiced curry but more like a sparkler right now
I'll trim it back, put it in some good soil and hopefully it will show some color soon. Here's what the variety is supposed to look like healthy (pic from Google)

Here are a few pictures of mine. The first two show how they turn white when beeing moved to another location. The purple part turns completly white overnight. Takes a week or two to recover.

Very nice!I'm trying to get one of all the Coleus variations out there, and I'm going to take one cutting of all my different types to overwinter.
I'll keep em Bonsaied, and compact,to be mother plants fr the following spring for cuttings.

Very nice bro! Really makes the spot look good.

I need to thin the herd to just the ones I want to over winter, way too many and don't want to kill them and for some reason I planted a tray full of seed :nonono: I'll try to get pics of everything tomorrow.

How do you over winter your coleus Bro?

I tried last year and they all died. I guess I have to keep a light over them instead of just keeping them in dormancy conditions.

I have kept a few cuttings alive I'd say for well over a month now in just oxygenated mineral water and light from fluros as an experiment. They are very healthy and growth has been kept to a minimum.

Space I was gone earlier, give me a call.

Very cool. Just saw this thread for the first time. These plants are beautiful and I've considered growing some. I'm curious if any of you with several varieties have tested the legend that they're psychoactive? I'd grow them simply for the aesthetics but that would definitely influence what strains I look into
