should I have gotten stitches? I fell down on my bicycle and the sprocket caught my leg. As you can see it left an open gash that was quite dirty at first.

Your gunna have a nice scar. I dont think you can get stitches now it looks like it already healed up a bunch. Your supposed to get stitches within hours of stuff happening.

Antibiotic maybe, but I don't see a NEED for stitches, however getting a couple might alleviate scarring. I do see some infection starting though.
Chances are you'll heal fine. If it starts to get more yellow and not closing up I would go though.

I think he just needs the penicillin though.
I saw a beautiful girl at a festival fall off a cliff, smash head first into a rock, she was all sorts of fucked up. Her campsite just superglued her face up. You can't even tell now.
I told her she was retarded and should go to the hospital.....but no girl is gonna leave her hula hoop, you know.

Basically if you are alive and not gangrenous, the question "Should I have gone to the hospital?" is always answered "No"
"Should I NOW go to the hospital" is a question this forum isn't qualified to answer

Haha I looked at your pic and immediately thought every avid mtn. biker has a scar like that, or should. As for stitches it depends on how fast you want it to heal and how much of a scar you mind having, not to mention how much maintenance you're willing to do. It will heal faster with less scarring, less puss discharge, fewer bandage changes, fewer stained sheets/towels/pants etc. if you get stitches. If you don't mind washing it, applying 3x antibiotic/neosporin and covering with a new bandage everyday - the up-scale dirtbag way- then fuck stitches. Personally, I have scars like that on both shins (pedals etc. ) and calves and consider them virtual symbols of my bad-assery.

I've had much, much worse without getting stitches. Then again I have a phobia of needles and won't get them willingly no matter how badly I'm injured. If I pass out from blood loss or something and end up in the hospital with stitches when I finally come to, not much I can really do about it.

Super glue is the trade worker's band-aid. The shit gets used every day. Probably not very healthy but it definitely works. It can also be really uncomfortable though.

i ignored a puncture before and thought i could just bandage it up with duct tape and paper towels. Had to get a bunch of puss squeezed out(painful) and got stitches. then i had to do the puss thing again(more painful) because i'd lost my anti-biotics. they were nice enough to give me more but told me if i lose em again i'm losing my arm.

i'm sure they wouldn't let that happen though...

Your hygiene may be an issue. Did you clean the wound or just toss some bacteria coated papertowels and duct tape on it?
A puncture is kind of different I'd assume, being a deeper wound and more prone to infection.

yea it was a pretty long split and a deep wound. by the second day i could see what looked like fat swelling outwards.
I avoided the hospital cause i was on the run. i also didn't really feel it till it got real bad because drugs. The puncture was caused by a "glassicle" that fell into my wrist while i was trying to take glass pieces out of the perimeter of a broken window. it was about 11 inches long and i don't know how deep it went but it was enough that it stood up on it's own and i had to pull it out.
i may have some pics somewhere but i think that phone got fried.

punctures are entirely different, especially if in a place that is not easily soakable. one of the main factors determining chance of infection with a puncture is how much (or little) it bleeds immediately afterwards, as well as the actual depth of the puncture.

You look fine man, no need for stitches and prob was too late for them anyways since it looks like it was healing and not very deep anyways. Ive only had them once when I sliced the tip of my index finger off. Alot of other times it was superglu or duct tape hahahaha

That wound looks a couple days old. Doesn't look infected. You should just let it be at this point. The healing has already begun and messing with it will make the scarring worse.

I was doing yard work in sandals and manage to walk right into that pitchfork. One of the sprongs went between my toes and penetrated about an inch in before it hit a bone. I washed the hole out with the hose, sprayed some lidocaine on then squirted hydrogen peroxide in with a syringe to get the dirt out. Fortunately the hole was in a place that it was naturally kept closed, so I didn't need stitches. It was petty sore for a few days but there was no infection.
Peroxide isn't really an antiseptic in the same way as iodine or alcohol. The real benefit of peroxide is that blood has an enzyme that decomposes peroxide into water and oxygen. When you put it on a wound all those little oxygen bubbles scrub the wound clean of debris.

Looks a lil red,
I'd at least splash some isopropyl or hydrogen peroxide on it for good measure and bandage it up

Encryptor, not to subtract from your topic but, I WISH THAT WAS MY LEG.
I have really bad eczema on my ankles. It looks dead. On top of that my ankle is swollen up like a balloon, very very painful: edema. On top of that I have open wounds that DO NOT HEAL because of the eczema and the edema. I hobble around like a zombie and my lower leg looks the part.
My whole day is pain driven. Sitting up, having to lie down, trying to get my groceries and stuff.. not happy.

Dude, swollen ankles and wounds that do not heal are serious symptoms - kidney disease, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure.

I would wash the area well, then slather on neosporin and cover with gauze.

I've been taking warm baths and wrapping it with gauze wrap. I add just petroleum jelly. Should I try the polysporin? it's still sore for sure and yes feels warm near the wound. I used some Hydrogen peroxide just now while in the bath.

i can't stress enough how effective tea tree oil is for healing wounds. you don't need to douse it, just gently apply a thin layer of it. 2-3 hours after the tea tree, add some triple-antibiotic (neosporin seems to work better than generics, imo). 4-6 hours later, hit with tea tree again
coconut oil is also somewhat effective as a topical antibiotic, and raw honey has some validity, as well.

no need to keep it wrapped unless you're doing an activity that could disturb it. it needs air-flow

I hear for open wounds it will leave less of a scar by keeping it covered until it heals.

I wouldn't put petroleum jelly on it at all. You need the wound to air out. I would use polysporin and wrap it up before bed but if your'e around the house there's no need to and would be far more beneficial in the healing process.

OP, don't listen to these wooks, use an american made antiseptic after disinfecting/washing the area (lightly scrub, don't be a bitch), then wrap in sterile cotton, it really is that fucking easy.

Bro
You need to disinfect that I see white pus and red inflammation around the wounds
Isopropyl alcohol n hydrogen peroxide can be both proquired at the store
Soap n petroleum jelly isn't gonna cut it

Most medical advice in the pub is laughable at best when it's genuine.
EDIT: unlike your advice, and my advice along with a couple others (?)

dude, i've had some nasty, fucked up injuries over the years and never had an infection. tea tree oil, warm water/salt, and triple antibiotic are all that is needed. peroxide has its place, but as a person who has skin reactions to it, i don't openly recommend it

I will vouch for tea tree oil
Its a antibiotic
I've used it in antifungal soaps for whenever I had ringworm
Suff works
But in a situation like this I think Isopropyl is a much stronger and cheaper more effective treatment

*antiseptic
isopropyl is definitely cheaper/more readily available, but i disagree with it being as/more effective

You shouldn't be using H2O2 anymore. Its good for cleaning and disinfecting the wound right after injury, but it does cause tissue damage and will slow the healing process.
TBH, You shouldn't be disinfecting an older wound at all, unless you are cleaning it out. Alcohol, iodine and peoxide (especially) kill your own cells as well as microbes. Those dead cells become a good medium for growth of bacteria. Best to clean gently with soap and water once a day, and keep it wrapped up with a coating of neosporin.

I've seen super glue work wonders on cuts.
I think he just needs the penicillin though.
I saw a beautiful girl at a festival fall off a cliff, smash head first into a rock, she was all sorts of fucked up. Her campsite just superglued her face up. You can't even tell now.
I told her she was retarded and should go to the hospital.....but no girl is gonna leave her hula hoop, you know.
that's ridiculous man

Do you not keep 2 litre bottles of water in the freezer on standby for such weather?
Frozen bottles of water can have many purposes and take a surprisingly long time to melt, even in hot weather.
