Milo prep question
    #23495972 - 07/31/16 03:07 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So I bought a 50 lb. bag of Milo from the feed store, I originally went to get oats but they were out, I chose Milo because I am semi familiar with it from working with WBS.
I soaked a huge batch last night(15 hours so far)and I don't think I want to simmer them, so I am wondering about how to go about loading these? When I drain them, how wet do they still need to be when loading, and how full do I need to load these to get them about 3/4 full after the cycle?
Anyways, appreciate any tips on the Milo guys.

Milo's pretty forgiving IME. But I'd stay a bit on the drier side, as it doesn't seem to reabsorb water during the pressure cook as easily as some grains will.

Anywhere around 10 hours should be good for milo (sorghum) I currently do a 2 parts oats 1 part milo with a 24 hour soak. The blend is more forgiving than just milo, which sometimes can be too dry and stall or too wet and explode and clump at the bag/jar bottoms. Also the 24 hour soak is convenient for me as i do all my work in the evenings. Lastly the mix of sizes give you more lbs and inoculation spawn points per volume of spawn. Aloha does a mix of oats and millet, for most if not all same reasons im sure.

Thanks man, I a going to pick up a bag of oats when it's back in stock sometime this week, thats what I was originally going to buy. Im getting masters ready right now, I just soaked them around 20 hours and drained and loaded in the jars, I just got the 941 up to pressure.
This is my first time doing it this way, I always simmer or boil, I sure like this better so far, my only concern is I didnt really rinse the grains before soaking and they looked a little dirty, but Im not gonna worry about it.

I just made up some milo grain jars.  I've worked with it in the past, the small grain size is nice, you can get more grain in a container.  I soaked mine 12 hours and then boiled for about ten minutes.  There were a ton a busted grains in it, but that might have been the cheap milo I got.

That's why I didnt want to boil them, every time I have boiled WBS the majority of milo always bursts.

How detrimental is chaff and other non milo to making draws? The last bag I got was filthy and had weevils to boot.

I just "winnowed" my bag using my shopvac exhaust and some plastic totes.  It helped some,  just not for the weevils.

Not sure where they came from, but i have weevils as well. I also use milo. I store in my grow room so it has been pretty problematic.

Against the common recommendation, I do not soak my milo anymore. I used too but this bag is very chaffey and the grains don't seem to harbor any contaminant fungi after pcing for the normal time. I've been simmering dry grain until hydrated then draining before loading into the pc. 100 quarts down and no contams to speak of.
