I am now...

I have in my cart a 1000cfm blower and bracket and a 24x24 HEPA.  What else do I need? not sure what a prefilter is exactly and I don't know if I need a speed controller... I'll search around for some comprehensive teks and see what others have done.

also looking at getting a AA 941 sterilizer(stove-top), from what I've seen around here people prefer the stopcock rather over the jiggler style valve.  Also have packs of unfiltered bags 12x24.  Wasn't sure if I should go with 12x30 or 12x24 bags.  Still lots of research to do before I complete this order.

I have an AA 930 sterilizer and its great, no stop cock..works fine for me. Whats better about the stop cock? And sounds like you just need dimensions your box. most people just use a air filter for a house hvac system(the cheap ones), i just cut mine out and duct taped it over the intake

I'm still working on this order... more to consider than I thought originally

I'm going with a 24x48 filter now.  Does anyone know what size blower I should be using for that?  I am looking at getting a 1600cfm blower.  Is that going to be super loud?

How deep does the box that you build have to be? I'd like to build this thing with a fairly narrow profile so that it does not sit out from the wall too far and take up all the table space.

A loaded AA941 isn't exactly a "stove-top" model. You throw that thing on a stove and you're likely to ruin your burners. You'd want to put it on a turkey fryer base.

I just ordered a Broil King 8 inch single burner 1500W.  Hopefully it can handle the task.

I don't think it was mini-pleat.  If it was I didn't notice.  Does it make any difference?

Nice build OP. I spent about 400 bucks all in on my hood. I got a Dayton 1TDU2 1202cfm blower on eBay for 150 bucks. It was cheap because of some minor cosmetic damage and the 2x2' hepa from fungi perfecti. It was a very fun project and it works great.

I didn't feel like doing any complicated math with my build, so I bought an overpowered blower and use it with a speed controller (another 20 bucks from harbor freight). I run the blower at about 1/3 maximum speed and I get perfect laminar flow.

This is my spawn lab setup. I've got the AA 25x electric sterilizer, which is awesome since I don't have to run back and forth between the lab and the kitchen. I always open it with the hood running, and break the vacuum in front of the hood with a clorox wipe wrapped around the stopcock.

Yeah I was always super uncomfortable working with a SAB. I'd get hot and sweaty in a matter of minutes, and they're so damn restrictive. Even with a tall SAB spawn bags and half gallon jars are next to impossible to work with, and the arm holes made my movements pretty clumsy, plus I hated all the planning and extra steps involved with SAB work. Now I have a nice wide open table and a cool breeze blowing on me when I work. The table height is perfect too. I do all my agar transfers and wedge drops sitting in the chair, and I inoculate spawn bags standing up.

You want whichever one allows the least amount of particles through. I got this one.

http://www.fungi.com/product-detail/product/24-x-24-x-58-micron-filter.html

Based on that I'd recommend the micron over the mini pleat.

from looking at FP I would say that the difference is mainly in the amount of resistance each filter offers.  The mini-pleat creates slightly less air resistance and so can be run on a slightly smaller blower, but you pay a slightly higher price for the filter.  It looks like they both filter out 99.99% and should both work fine.  I think the 24x48 I'm ordering only comes in standard pleat, so I got that.

I wonder if the 1600cfm blower I ordered is going to be super loud?

When the flow hood is not in use, should the filter be covered with something?  I imagine dust settling from the air onto the filter would then be blown off the filter and onto your work.

The first time I put a loaded 941 on my newer stove, the stove broke a little bit and lowered but I still use it, takes longer to get up to pressure though than the propane burner, at one point I have had 2 loaded 941's on it and it was pretty sketchy.

I've never covered the front except during moves. I alway run the hood for 15-20 minutes before starting any work too.

I'd imagine your 1600cfm blower will be pretty loud. My 1202cfm blower is really loud on full blast, but I only run it at 1/3 speed for ideal laminar flow. Hell I bet it could run a 24x48" hood considering it runs my 24x24 at less than half speed.

I couldn't imagine running a 941 on a stove. They're heavy as fuck even empty.

I'd buy one if I could get it for the right price, but I'm also thinking of saving up for a 75x because of how convenient the electric sterilizers are. Something like this looks ideal for running a 941. I might buy this for cooking and for larger scale pasteurization.
