Jars fruiting but not 100% colonized [photos added]
    #23494892 - 07/31/16 08:15 AM (7 years, 5 months ago)

First-time grower. I've been using PF-Tek for Simple Minds as a guide. I apparently exposed the jars to light too early--I didn't realize until doing some further reading how important it is that the jars be 100% colonized. So now I've got jars that are 80-90% colonized and showing mushroom growth. How should I proceed? Should I birth and try to scrape off the noncolonized substrate? Or is it OK to return the jars to the dark at this point to attempt further colonization?

Edited to add photos:

That second jar is fully colonized actually. Should I dunk even with the pins on there?

Hey man. Welcome to the Shroomery. Contrary to popular belief jars do not need to be in the dark to grow and exposure to light will not cause them to pin early. I keep my jars in ambient light 24/7.

I need a bit more information to diagnose what is going on here. Did you take the cakes out of the jars before they were colonized? Or did mushrooms start growing inside the jars? Often, pins growing early while still inside a jar (invitro) is a sign of contamination.

cheers,
pb

take the tinfoil off the jar lids dude...tinfoil is only used to prevent condensation getting the filter wet during the PC cycle...it should be removed after inoculation.

your cakes have stalled because they aren't able to breathe with that foil over their heads.

Holy those are wet. What recipe/tek did you use? You can dunk and roll a colonized cake with pins to answer your question. As for the first one, I'd let that shit try to colonize more.
