Going on my First Hunting Expedition

Hi, I live in NYC and am going to be House sitting for a week in the middle of a state park in the Lower Hudson valley. In short hiking distance from this place there are streams and rivers, bogs and river marshes abundant maple trees and a few cow pastures. I have an idea of specific areas I want to search but my question to those with experience is should I limit my expeditions to only after a rain or will there be a chance even if there is none? This summer has been quite wet and it is raining as I type this.
Also what should I bring with me while hunting.
I have been researching for a few months, reading on the different types of species that possibly grow in my neck of the country and what habitats.
Any additional tips or suggestions are welcome.

Mushrooms typically fruit 1 to 2 weeks after rains.
Hunt the areas available to you. Even if you don't find what you want, you are still practicing the hunting and identification so you will get better at it.

What are you targeting?
I suggest targeting medicinal/edible fungi, I found TONS of reishi the other day, didn't pick any though, but was easily 10lbs or more of them. I would stick to the woods though, it's been fairly warm in the NE, so things are pretty dry out.
Pastures are probably going to be dry, but you could find where each farm dumps the dung they clean up if they have indoor areas to house animals, manure piles are full of hay, stable shavings, and poo, which makes for a lovely substrate for shrooms to grow from.
Just ask for permission before going on anyone's land though.

Good to hear about the 1-2 week time frame, it line up perfectly for me. I'll be looking for both edible non actives and actives. I think I'm going to start in the woods by the house. It's in the middle of a forest with seldom used trails. The forest itself is a hardwood one with everything from tulip trees and sycamores to several types of oaks and maples and from my readings I think, for the active varieties, Laughing jimmies (is that how you spell it) should be growing in that ecosystem. In terms of edibles chanterelles and black trumpets are in season so I'm hoping to find those, it would be nice to find a bunch so I can try a new recipe and/or leave some for my friend who owns the house.
I was reading I should bring a wax bag, or paper bags also I have read contradicting things about when gathering mushrooms you should not put edible mushrooms in the same container as toxic ones. Does this mean I should bag each type I find in it's own container or would one big one work?
Thanks

Hi, I'm real close to where you'll be staying. I can tell you exactly what's out when you get up here. For Chantarelles the first flush just past and many got dried out. Hopefully the rain last night will pop some more in the next few days. Black trumpets are not up yet. It's been too dry (and/or hot). I expect to see them soon too with this last rain. There are oysters all over the place throughout the year. Chicken of the woods are out in certain areas as well as berkley polypores. Lobster mushrooms should also be flushing again here soon.
I haven't found any new reishi in 3 weeks, but again I'm hoping to see new growth after this rain. There are Gyms in the area but I haven't seen any yet this season.
Send me a PM if you want. Depending on where you are we could get together for some foraging.

You should keep each collection in a separate container. They are separate collections if the group of mushrooms are separate from each other. If you find a little group of mushrooms here and another group that looks the same 10 feet away, they are separate groups. You do this because, in spite of looking the same, they may actually be different species. If you mix them, then it may be practically impossible to separate the collections.
If you're collecting to eat (for whatever reason) and can accurately identify your collections in the field, then do as you want. Those rules above are mostly for those that are collecting either stuff they're not certain of ID in the field or when collecting for scientific purposes.

If you have a car to take to spots, bring a basket to put specimens in, or some people use a tackle box with holes punched in it for ventilation so specimens don't rot, if you don't have either of those things, then sure paper bags will work fine, but don't use plastic bags, they will cause your specimens to degrade quickly.
I have brought a basket in the past and a roll of wax paper, then each collection I was unsure of, would wrap in wax paper for later identification. When I was just targeting edibles/medicinal mushrooms, would throw them in the same basket because there was no worries as far as mixing bad things up was concerned, so had no use for wax paper.

I know it's been a while but I'd like to show the results of my first hunt.

Found some golden chanterelles and a type of bollete that I couldn't identify. In addition I found lots of LBMs, no actives. I made a delicious pasta dish with Chanterelles.
I learned a lot on my first hunt and am preparing for going on another over the labor day weekend!

Nice chants man! Like I mentioned before I'm very close to where you're staying. There are ton of boletes out. Yellow, yollowfoot and cinnabar chants, and black trumpets. Also oysters and chicken of the woods.

Thanks! I made some big mistakes on my first hunt. Mistake one, camera battery died early so it limited my harvesting abilities as I couldn't take pics of the habitat. Mistake 2, I brought Paper bags last time and by the end the bags started to tear (it was extremely hot and muggy and I was a mile in the bush). This time I'm bringing a backup camera and an actual basket.

I never thought I would be as excited as I was when I found the chanterelles and could identify them in the field

Right on! I usually keep 4 of the canvas type grocery bags in my backpack, and a couple small paper bags. I use the small bags if there's one or 2 I want to grab just to ID. Then the larger bags are to keep the species I find separate so they don't crush each other. Like you don't really want a big chicken in a bag with your delicate black trumpets.
If you want to forage together, send me a pm.
LOL, to the chant excitment. I get it!. I found a huge patch last weekend. It was about 12 feet wide and ran about 50 feet. I seriously squealed like a little girl when I saw it!

Good idea on the grocery bags. That would be great, I'm not sure which day I'm going to be hunting but once I know for certain I'll send you a PM. That sounds massive!
