Need help identifying this
    #23493009 - 07/30/16 04:31 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Found this single dry mushroom on the sidewalk next to someone's lawn in the D.C. Metro area.

Gills:
Purplish-black

Stem:
Tan & black stem, roughly 6 inches long and maybe a centimeter in diameter.

Cap:
Tan, with a bit of darkening near the top.

Spore print color:
Too dry to take spore print

Bruising:
Stem bruised to blackish color, no other bruising apparent.

Other information:
Total noob here with no prior picking knowledge. Just found this on the sidewalk and am wondering what it is. Smells musty/bitter.

What you have there is a mushroom that is dried.

Probably would not help. It is not any active species if that's what you are hoping. It would probably be a mushy disgusting mess very rapidly.

You could try it anyway. Soaking it in water for a half hour would restore its moisture levels but it probably won't look the same. If you do this take pictures and then chuck it in the compost bin.
