I definately agree on using wood rather than grain as spawn for outdoor beds. My azure bed was slowed this spring because after it was inoculated a gopher plowed through and ATE about half the spawn( hope the lil bastard tripped his lil gopher balls off). The upside is he spread it about and now the bed is fully colonized (9m2) and pinning for falls fruit. My midsummer feeding was simply alder chips hydrated in 3% h2o2.I have had no further intrusions by burrowing varmits now that the grains are gone. BTW I have found adding a small percentage of straw to the wood greatly increases the speed which wood lovers propagate as spawn. The myc uses the hollow straw like a superhighway to traverse the media.Additionaly my azure bed is layered Phalaris straw and chips with No difference in the vigorous nature of the myc on either substrate. Also the gopher which plowed my patch has spread the myc and the patch now has several sattelites in a 20m2 area. IMHO outdoor cult is by far the most rewarding and interesting. Not really having to deal with contaminants just the occasional rodent. I truly love my hericium and shitakke logs and my P.eryngii beds of alder chips. But my azures are my treasures. Peace, WR

would they come back when it got warmer? anything above 25F should be ok then?..most of the time the temps in the dead of winter will be in the 40s to 30's, how will they hold up in that environment?

The patch itself can sustain temperatures far under the freezing point. Just the mushrooms don't grow anymore when the temperature is under 0?C.

The jar of sterilized beech wood chips has been inoculated with rye grain spawn 8 days ago. Shaken 2 days ago.

Hrm... I've been attempting this, and i tried direct inoculation of spores onto rye and I got no results. Any thoughts?

No germination, no contamination, nothing? Was the rye cooled down enough? How old are the spores? In which form were the spores and what were your procedures?

Do you think it would be possible to have any kind of outdoor cultivation operation in a Zone 5 region? The place I'm thinking of usually gets down to -25` F (-31.67` C) in the coldest days of the year. Would this be too cold, even if I provided insulation? Also, if its too cold for P. Azures, what (psychoactive) species would I be able to grow in those temps?
Thx

-25 is very cold.....The only way to see is to try it out. How about colonizing them outdoors during summer, and fruiting them in a cold cellar in autumn?

I've never even seen a cellar in real life. Do you think it would be possible to fruit them outside, in an enclosure, like a greenhouse or slighty heated martha?
