>what about chinese elm? Don?t see why not.
Here is a list of trees recommended for the cultivation of gourmet and medicinal species, you can pretty much translate this 1:1 for growing Psilocybe wood lovers.

>what about direct inoculation of a pf cake with a wild print syringe? If the syringe is clean(which CAN be the case if you worked clean when taking the print and the mushroom itself was clean) then it works. Otherwise you will see contamination grow. P. azurescens colonizes normal PF cakes in ~3 weeks at room temperature.
>can u inoculate from a syringe just strait into fine wood chips? Hardly. Spores germinate very poorly on woodchips. Inoculation on something more nutritious is needed if you want to see results in a reasonable time.

>i am not in the hardiness zone but ill giver a shot. outdoor season end of may to sept. If you are in a hardiness zone less than 5, you could potentially still have success by letting the substrate colonize outdoor during the summer, and then move it indoor in a cold cellar when the temperatures fall under the freezing point. Mobyd has done this the past 2 years and it worked well for him, here are the links:
Azures INDOOR/OUTDOOR Azurescens indoor 2003
>would it be a good idea to cover the bed with cardboard to keep it moist and make it easy to water? Yes, you can do this. The rule is to not over-water, the bed should be kept moist at all times for fast colonization , but don?t let it sit in water. If you keep the bed moist, the colonization will speed up considerably. In drier conditions the colonization will take longer. I had a couple of patches that I didn?t water at all throughout the very dry summer, and they still fruited, wood lovers are quite hardy.

>is the point of being outdoors is to have the full environment?
Yes, the point of colonizing them outdoors is to expose them to natural conditions. It seems as they profit greatly from this, since "normal" indoor cultivation attempts are very hard to successfully accomplish.

In this thread http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=1020070 he left the trays uncovered, I guess loosely covering with cardboard can?t hurt. Try both and report your findings.

No casing layer needed, but possible and potentially beneficial. I like to make my patches in form of channels with earth in between, this way the mycelium is in contact with soil which it obviously benefits from, most fruits come from the area where the woodchips come contact with soil. Some fruits also occur away from the patch in soil covered with growing grass. I forgot to post this link before, a very good pictorial about P. azurescens cultivation: http://utenti.lycos.it/azurescens/data/taf_e.pdf (pdf, 900kb)

Beech smoke chips were simmered for 1 hour in order to soak them, then strained for 10 minutes and pressure cooked for 45 minutes in jars. After they cooled down the jars were inoculated with the above Psilocybe azurescens birdseed spawn.

i am assuming it takes so long to colonize wood chips because of not very avaliable energy and nutrients. so what if one was to use shredded aspen to have a larger surface area and then added a bit of karo, or even a little bit of brf?
thanks anno. gunna have to hang out sometime.
