Is there a doctor in the house...
    #2349210 - 02/18/04 08:20 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

What does it mean when you wake up at 2am with your lower back burning with unbearable intense heat...so hot it feels like it's on fire and you are about to burst in flames. JUST the lower back? Here's two things:

I am just getting over the flu, I had a fever
My lower back was really tense but it got massaged yesterday and felt better

I woke up screaming last night because it hurt so bad.. I had to soak a towel in cold water and wrap it around my lower torso... whats the dilly yo?

I hope it's not my kidneys yo.. I only got two of them junks..

Really it's only been feeling like really tense muscles..for the past several days. After a Opeth concert the other night (where I probably got banged around a bit in the pit...) my neck and lower back muscles were very sore. The past two days I've been going to sleep freezing cold and waking up drenched in sweat... it sucks. But I've attributed it all to this body flu or something. Now last night I was finally starting to feel a little better and I wake up and my back feels like its about to light on fire.. I seriously thought I was going to spontaneously combust into flames.

Cant afford no doctor either.. still trying to pay off the last doctor from two years ago. I guess I'll just take some milk thistle. Backiotomies be damn expensive.

Its good that you have a female around to take care of you , just take your vitamins and drinks lots of fluids you know the regular stuff. With stuff like muscle pains or cramps, I like to take a long bath (it always helps) if your hot make it cold ya know. But remember your fluids dude, you may be a little dehydrated.

I had a really bad cold/fever last fall where when I was trying to go to sleep, I would have to stay under all the covers because I was so cold. Then I would wake up sometime in the night and it felt like it was 120. I couldn't take either. It sucked.

lower backpains and nightsweats, accompanied by burning is the usual primary onset of your first herpes outbreak.

congradulations, the first is the worst.

this occurs between 1-4 weeks from point of exposure.
it can be caught from coldsores, or from genital exposure, weather there are visable sores or not, 65% of cases have assymptomatic viral shedding, meaning you can catch it from a girl who never knew she had it and still develop the worst case ever.

good luck, it should also be noted you can give it back to the person who gave it to you with substantial mutation to make it become symptomatic. plus the retroviral onset will come on quicker for her (or him, wink)

that will show em!

erm..I really don't think it's herpes...  I've only had contact with one girl in the past year, and she's been monogomous. I know it can lie dormant though, but I really don't think that's the case.. I've been sick the past three days, not just lower backpains and nightsweats.. fever, coughing, dizziness, nausea, chills..etc.. these are not symptoms of herpes.

I talked to my mom who is a nurse and she said it was probably a combination of things. 1. straining the back muscles a few nights earlier at a concert 2. massaging it with the massage cream that has capsicum in it.. it was probably reactivated as I slept 3. the swollen tissue combined with absorbed capsicum could explain the burning pain

oh yeah I forgot to mention in my initial post... three days ago I was at a concert headbanging my head off.. that might have something to do with it

sounds like you strained those muscles. however, it could be a pinched nerve.

what to do if yer nerves be pinching:

- lay down on your back on the ground (not a bed)
- slowly raise your left knee towards your face
- wrap your hands around your knee
- keep your head/neck flat on the ground
- keep your other leg flat on the ground, as well - if you cannot keep your other leg totally flat, have someone push down hard
- pull your knee as close to your face as possible
- pull and pull and hold for a count of 60
- feel the burn
- repeat with other knee

do this cycle about 4 times. your back pains should magically disappear. The trick is to do this on a regular basis so that you are flexible.

another tek (a little more complicated):

- wrap a rope around your left ankle
- lay flat on your stomach on the ground
- pull your leg up and towards your head by pulling the rope behind your back/over your shoulder
- keep your knee/leg straight - if this is hard, have someone push hard to keep your knee straight
- pull and pull and hold for a long count
- let it burn - its worth it
- repeat with other ankle

do this a cycle of 4 times. And then do other cycles but from different pulling-angles.

a straight knee is 100% essential

I've said it a hundred times before, and I'll say it again. Humans are not supposed to sleep on soft comfy matresses. Padding? Yes. Something you sink into? No. A stiff sleeping surface lets your spine soften itself so you can sleep better.. on a soft surface, it makes itself rigid so you can sleep better. I've been sleeping on a solid surface for 2 years now, after having a case of lower back pain.. and I have not experienced anything of the sort since, no matter what I've done, or am doing.

Well first off, couple questions:

1. Where exactly in the lower back does it hurt?

2. Does it hurt when you move it? Are their various postures where it doesn't hurt?

3. Lift any heavey weights lately?

4. Does the skin looked enflamed along your back? You should really examine yourself in the mirror, feel around the area, tense? soft? warm?

Be as specific as you can.

1. Where exactly in the lower back does it hurt?

along the sides of the spine about three 1/2 inches to either side.. starting above the tailbone up to lower mid back.

2. Does it hurt when you move it? Are their various postures where it doesn't hurt?

It's just plain sore now.. sitting straight seems to help.

3. Lift any heavey weights lately?

mmm..not since last week... but I did have some intense headbanging at opeth

4. Does the skin looked enflamed along your back? You should really examine yourself in the mirror, feel around the area, tense? soft? warm?

It looks normal. feels warm

try streching your back by arching like a cat

drink some fluids

consider an NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen. higher dose for average adult is ibuprofen 800mg three times daily. make sure you lack allergies to pain meds called NSAID's including aspirin.

another possibility might be a urinary tract infection. possibly a visit to a medical provider might be a good idea. esp if it contiunes or esp if it gets worse.

You probably have some lower spinal stress happenin'.

When you woke up from the pain, do you sleep on your back? Sometimes it's hard for your lower spinal arch to adjust and that can cause alot of pain if you've been exerting alot of force around that area. Headbanging may have cause some stress but that'd usually be in your lower neck area unless you headbang with your entire body.

When you lay on your back on a straight surface, does it hurt?

no it actually feels better when I lay on my back... it probably was just some spinal stress..

but its steadily getting better so I dont think its anything serious

I tried arching too and it helped.. drinking tons of fluids
thanks for the help guys..LS...oDin.. everyone.. but I'm gonna crash now..goodnight

When you lay on your back on a straight surface, does it hurt?

When I do, it hurts like hell. Right at the base of my spine. I generally don't do anything stressful during the day, though. What would that mean, LS?

Well, your back is naturally curved so it's basically your back adjusting to the flat surface. You might notice that the pain slowly fades off as you maintain laying on the ground.

It's nothing serious, but your back is not naturally prone to laying on a flat surface. The initial point of adjustment is because when you're going about your day (standing, sitting, etc) your weight is being supported by the lower inward arch on your back, so it naturally increases in curvature. And when you lay down, your back is adjusting to the lack of stress, regressing away from that daytime curvature.

Ok cool. I just wondered about that :smirk:

I'm worried I've got a shitty back. If I stand with my head down for more than like 5 mins I get the same kind of intense lower-back pain. Say if I'm washing the dishes or something like that.
