When I flew spirit they charged more than that for tap water with no ice... $3 I think.

The flight was also delayed, then changed gates then they were checking bags as people were boarding the plane because they didn't have room for everyone's carry on bags. They asked me to check mine and I was like hell no.... Then there was the plane...

That's some shitty service. It makes you wonder how a company like this is even allowed to be in business

Maybe there's no extra charge for ice

They're a bare minimum sort of airline - your ticket price includes literally NOTHING - want a pillow or blanket? You can have one but they'll charge you a fee.
That is what I've heard about Spirit. Haven't flown them personally though I've heard some wonky things about checked baggage or them making you check some stuff that should've been allowed to be carry on, idk I'll have to ask my friend again about his experience - but they sound like a good airline to tough out if your flights only gonna be a few hours.

I'm fine with just a seat and nothing else at all, but if they're going to charge me for each bag (and I'd probably bring two), which would bring the rate up close to the other airlines anyways, then I may as well just go with a reputable airline.

I may be going to Detroit in the near future to see some family and catch a Tigers game, and round trip Spirit tix are $200. Meanwhile the next cheapest for the same date (American Airlines) is $300. It's a 3 hour flight...pretty sure I can tough out a bad airline for that amount of time so I can save a hundred bucks. Hell I could put that $100 to the car rental.
Their tickets aren't really cheaper at all.
Consider the fact that they charge you $70 to take carry-on luggage onto the plane (it's actually cheaper to check-in your bags at $50), and they also charge extra for any sodas or juice or drinks you get on the flight, so basically the amount comes out to the exact same as any other flight, except with shittier service.

NEVER FLY SPIRIT. THE SEATS ARE SO GOD DAMN CLOSE TO EACH OTHER, I HAD TO SIT WITH MY KNEES UP AND I BECAME CLAUSTROPHOBIC. I HAD TO TELL THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT THAT I NEEDED TO STAND UP FOR A MOMENT BECAUSE THE SEATS ARE TOO CLOSE. IM 5'8" AND ONLY WEIGH 140 POUNDS, SO OF YOU'RE BIGGER THAN ME, YOU'LL HATE IT.
THEY DON'T GIVE YOU SHIT FOR FREE. NO FREE BAG OF PRETZELS, NO FREE WATER. NOTHING. OH, AND YOU HAVE TO CHECK YOURSELF IN OR ELSE PAY TO BE CHECKED IN AT THE AIRPORT.
SPIRIT IS BULLSHIT. I WOULD RATHER PAY $100 MORE TO NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH BULLSHIT. IF YOU LOOK AT THE COST TO CHECK IN A BAG, IT'S PROBABLY MORE EXPENSIVE TO FLY SPIRIT THAN TO FLY SOME OTHER AIRLINES WITH FREE BAG CHECK IN.

Spirit is ok as long as you do your homework before your flight and of course, depending on what your other options are. If you travel like me, mostly self sufficiently, so long as an airline doesn't charge me to take a piss I get along ok; and Spirit doesn't charge for that, yet...
I have to say, my experiences on Spirit were a little different than some above, I have always been on a newer airplane with Spirit and haven't had any problems with delays.
American Airlines far and above have the oldest airplanes in my experience (for domestic flights anyway). A lot of them still have seats with ash trays... I have also been delayed more an AA flights than any other airline. They also overbook so if everyone shows up to the flight you end up in the uncomfortable position of not knowing whether you will even be permitted to board the plane.
I stick to Southwest and Delta when I can...
