what to do with these old jars of B+
    #23479974 - 07/26/16 08:14 PM (7 years, 7 months ago)

I got really busy here lately and didn't have the time to get around to this set of B+ jars in time to spawn them to bulk. The other grows from the same batch got contaminated in the tub. I think it was do to the grain not being 100% before I spawned to bulk. Now I have this set of 6 jars. 2 have had green contamination of some kind and have been thrown out. 1 has this webbing type of growth starting (left picture), and another has this kind of thing going one (right picture). That leaves 2 jars that look like they are 100% colonized and ready to go. Any suggestions on what to do? I am trying to avoid mycellium abuse here.

If I had to guess, and I do, I would say the two that you think are good are not good.

Open the jars. Remove any dry or uncolonized bits of grain from around the rim and top. Case with coir. Top fruit in SGFC (or monotub if you have enough to fill it 3/4 with jars). Use a syringe to bottom water after pins show.

That's what I did with these, they were bacterial and would have contamed if spawned. This way ya get fruits.

how would you pasteurize a small amount of coir? I am still using eco-earth bricks.

I don't have a SGFC that is set up and going and don't really have the time to get that together along with all my other stuff going on. So I am wondering if the work is worth the pay off? I am more intrigued about the experience of doing it but I am sure I will come across this again in the future.

You don't need to pasteurize coir for starters. Second what you don't use you can simply dry out and reuse. I would just chip off a chunk off a block, bring it to field capacity, and case. You could nuke it for a few min in the microwave or PC for 15 min if ya wanted to but it's not necessary.

okay. So I really didn't want to pass this learning opportunity up so here is what I did. I am still new to all of this so let me know if I fucked up anywhere and what I might be able to do better.

mixed one jar of coir with half a jar of piping hot water from the faucet and mixed them together. I had some cheese cloth laying around so I grabbed that to strain with.

I pressed out the water by twisting and squeezing only. When I opened the cloth up the coir stayed in a ball but still broke very easily in almost chunks. It felt about like the substrate I get from the coir tek I use but maybe a little on the dry side.

I opened the colonized jars and these three didn't smell like anything bad. One has a little bacteria in it, the same shit that is in the right picture in the OP. I scraped off the possibly UN-colonized top layer of the grain and covered it with the coir for a casing layer.

The jars are currently covered with foil and in my cupboard. I have less than ideal conditions to be able to set up a SGFC. I have my old tub from when I used to fuck with cakes. It is set up fine. I do not have the perlite any more but I do have some clay pebbles (hydroton) from other hobbies. My options for housing this bad larry are limited and less than ideal as well. My options are either in a barn/shed area, or my un-finished basement. Temps in the barn are pushing 100 degrees the day and probably 80-90 at nights right now with low RH, while the basement holds steady at about 70 or so with high RH.

The biggest trip of my life was realizing all of the events and actions described in posts made by this account were never real and had never actually happened, but were instead the delusional ramblings of a severely mentally ill human being. I just had to move on for my own good. I love you all.

I wait until pins are in. Then I add a few cc every day. If it's not absorbed in a day I drain it off so it doesn't get stale. Then give it 12 hours before adding more.

I just use a syringe cause it's easy to direct the stream down the side of the jar. A cc or two is plenty. Good luck.

The "webbing" in the left jar is likely the result of mycelium pulling away from the inside surface of the jar.  Slight constriction of the substrate is common when it is fully colonized and consolidated.  It has happened to me.

The jar on the right is fucked.
