Growing oysters in a flower pot?
    #23484264 - 07/28/16 12:12 AM (7 years, 7 months ago)

Okayyyy so my girlfriend and I have recently painted a flower pot (we paint pottery at this local store) and now that it has been in the kiln and it's ready to go, we are discussing what to try to grow in it. She wants to grow hibiscus but we read that we should wait til spring of next year for that. So I suggested mushrooms
She isn't particularly interested in mushrooms like I am but I think she is down for us growing them in the flower pot (I did paint mushrooms on the side of it after all). I haven't ever grown mushrooms before, however I am very familiar with a few techniques from my time on here. I figure this could be an opportunity to finally grow some mushrooms

1) Can BRF oyster cakes be buried in a flower pot with a certain mix to make the mycelium take over and fruit oyster mushrooms? I know they love wood and straw but could they work with a soil mix?
2) To make her happy with us growing what I wanna grow, I'd like to have the mushrooms at least look nice so she enjoys them. What type of oyster mushroom usually looks the best in your opinion?
3) Could I grow a small plant in the pot also while growing the mushrooms? The pot is only maybe about 8 inches in diameter
4) Any other feedback on this subject that is helpful would be appreciated

Pink oysters are pretty, they have a lot of colour when they get enough light and have a fibrous pattern to them.

you could bury cakes in loam or something and you should get a few fruits. I would crumble the BRF cakes into some pasteurised straw in the flower pot then case it. Water it like a plant and you should get some oysters. I had some left over grain spawn that was getting a little past it so I buried it in a cardboard box in the garden and oysters popped up about 2 weeks later.

Cool idea. You could use chopped up straw with some worm castings. I have grown veggies in baskets full of old straw logs, tomatoes are in now, mushrooms come out of the sides of the basket often. The worm castings provide some micronutrients that the straw will run low on fast, better life for the plant. You may want to try plant tone too, gr0wer uses this for his sawdust blocks.

So a pot with some colonized supplemented straw would do fine in a flower pot and with a plant growing. Just make sure the plant you grow doesn't block mushrooms from coming up.

So how would we go about this? Pasteurize straw and mix it along with a crumbled BRF cake in the pot. Then cover it with some verm? Should I add other stuff?

No need to add anything to straw, a casing layer would just be useful to stop it drying out.

The mushrooms would have to fruit on top. The flower pot of course doesn't have holes in the side like a laundry basket or conventional straw log. Would this be a problem? Or would the mycelium know to focus the fruiting on top?
Also would you guys think this should be an outdoor type of deal? I would think so since outdoor conditions are naturally so beneficial.
Thanks to everyone who has reponded :stoned:

they will fruit from the top, they might prefer to fruit from the side but it's not needed. In or out is fine, so long as you have the right climate.

You should add something to the straw since you are planning to also grow a plant. There isnt many micronutrients in colonized straw for the plant to consume. If only mushrooms, no need, with a plant in the plans add something.

Nah, we will probably not grow a plant too. So it'll just be for mushrooms

So what should i layer the top of the pot with? A casing layer of vermiculite?

Straw or wood chips should work well. Hot water bath pasteruize, i would probably do a coir, dirt or leaves casing. Pinks or gold oysters would look nice. If you have a culture just make 1-2 quarts of grain spawn. BRF cakes would work too but grain spawn is better.

Does that flower pot have holes at the bottom? If so then its fine to water it like a plant.
Add some compost or sand to add grit to your sub, this allows water to drain.

Case in compost, and keep hydrated. Dry compost, dry substrate.

I'm sure grain would be better, however I don't have a pressure cooker so I'm just gonna use BRF. Thankyou for your reply. It's good to get advice from a trusted cultivator

Yea, there is a drainage hole. I will consider adding sand but I feel like adding sand in straw won't help the drainage much. Or am I just wrong?

Once the straw is fully colonized it will be hard to get water to the center.
The myc and compression will make it too hard to drain properly.

when doing things like this we use wood chips, we have a friend we set up a myco filtration system for her natural pool filter ( plants and algae) we have a similar setup to a pot, a wooden wine barrel with holes drilled for drainage. filled with wood chips ( pasteurized with lime treatment). the wood chips drain real well and with a waterfall effect going in they aerate good. we get fruiting bodies every couple weeks.

straw just mats down too much and goes anaerobic.
