Okay, so I'm gonna start an oyster grow. Should I go with getting a spore syringe or should I just get a couple pounds of spawn?

You can get liquid culture syringes off of ebay for like $10-15 a pop, or some of the Shroomery sponsor vendors carry them. I just got a few of them and they aren't growing, maybe the heat killed them in the mail...

Get a culture, spawn or grow bag kit and work off that culture.

You can buy grain or sawdust spawn from any number of online vendors. I recently purchased 4 lbs of pink and gold oyster spawn online for $50. Not sure where the above poster is looking but you don't have to buy in bulk.

I would prefer to start with spores and knock up substrate that way. However, I have read that it would be better to start with colonized spawn. Is this true? If so, what is a good place to buy good quality oyster spawn? How much is, say, 5 pounds equal to in volume?

1 pound = 1 quart roughly. Depends on the type of grain and the moisture content but that's generally pretty close.
Proven spawn > spores every time.

It's usually about a 1 buck a pound, look into Amycel and give them a call, Aloha too, they are bit more expensive but have more variety available. Go to their websites. When you get some good commercial spawn take some grains to some plates and then to slants so you always have it.

Please don't take this the wrong way but you have a lot more reading to do before you buy or knock up anything....

don't take this the wrong way but you have a lot more reading to do before you buy or knock up anything....spores>substrate is an ineffective way of doing anything as the sub would just trich out. The best way to cultivate cubes is spores>agar>grain spawn>sub or edibles clean lc>grain spawn>sub
Sorry if I sound grumpy, days on the shroomery can be long days.

Nahhhhhh, I intend to continue to read, but trust me, I've done plenty of reading. I am just a lot less knowledgeable with gourmet mushrooms as opposed to cubensis. The reason I was wanting to start with a spore syringe and make BRF cakes is because that is a typical method for cube grows. I figured I should use the same process with a gourmet grow so I could gain some experience in both categories. However, I realize that they are two different types of grows and spores are pretty uneccesary for gourmet when you can just start with spawn. So I'll go with that route now that you guys have shown me the way. Is spawn that you can buy online typically healthy with good genetics?

You want to buy spawn from a spawn company, most of what they sell are commercial strains meant to produce. Aloha Culture Bank and Amycel are the 2 that I use.
