How long do I pressure cook for with an 11psi pressure cooker?
    #23487633 - 07/28/16 10:14 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So I just bought a new pressure cooker and it only goes up to 11 psi. All the guides say the pressure cooker needs to be at 15 psi for 60-90 mins or more at a lower psi, but they never specify how much more for lower psis. Can the spawn jars even be sterilized at 11 psi?

There is a chart somewhere for the proper times. I forget who has/had it in their sig. Then you will have less guess work. But honestly if this is going to be a halfways regular thing of yours, just get a proper PC.

seriously doubt it, or you misinterpreted it. RR and most other farms dont use a PC to sterilize grains just normal pressure and 8hr steaming.

I've seen that chart.. they make it a linear chart, when clearly it should be a parabola. Saying it takes 20 minutes or some shit at 25+ psi, clearly a lie.

My old PC wouldn't go past 8 psi, and I always did wbs for 2.5 hours. I had very little issues growing.

Space I never said he used it I read on this site that he had said that here is a quote it's not the one I saw originally but
Quote:

RogerRabbit said:
The wax paper simply helps to hold in moisture, and also create a humid microenvironment where the pins and fruits form.  I prefer rye berries over any other spawn.

I save my coffee grinds from the coffee pot every morning in a bin.  When I make up substrate, I use horse manure, 25% or so coffee grinds, five to ten percent gypsum, and hydrated lime at the rate of 1 teaspoon per cup of combined manure/coffee.  I also add about 1/2 teaspoon per cup of blood meal.  Pasteurize and use.

10 psi will be fine to sterilize grains.  Just go two hours.

You're right space because sterilization can be achieved at 1 psi with enough time right ?

Thanks all the advice everyone. I've got a question about using the cooker though.

Reading the instructions on my pressure cooker, it says the safety valve releases pressure once the cooker reaches 11 psi. When this happens, it says you're supposed to reduce the heat. If that's the case, how can I keep the psi at a constant 11 psi for 2 and a half hours?

How do I keep all the water from evaporating? Or is the steam so light that it won't evaporate all of it in 2.5 hours?

Fill with water between 1/3 and 1/2 the height of the jars you intend to use. Once you are at pressure, very little heat is required to maintain the temperature, just enough to compensate for the radiative cooling.

Much more and you loose a lot of heat as steam. I go for 1 hour 30 minutes once at 15 PSI and have no problems at all. If you are using at 11 PSI you will want to up the cooking time to at least 2 hours, but 2 and a half would be better if you can stand the wait and tend the cooker.

Uh, no.

Like, an inch or two up the jars is all that's necessary.  Hell, like an inch or two, total, is enough.  I barely lose any water at all when I pressure cook correctly.  I usually fill the water just barely over the top of the trivet, then when I look after, there's still water over the top of the trivet.

By all means though, use more, because that's better than running dry, but it will affect the efficiency of your run by quite a bit.  Steam is easier to pressurize than liquid water.

But more cost effective at one psi cooking 30 gallons of grains in 24 hours vs 2 hours for 7 quarts.

Real research will achieve better results.
Use these strips and do a few dud runs. Keep records. Then YOU will know about YOUR pressure cooker.

If those are strips that change at 15psi 121C they'll never change color in a PC that goes to 11psi and not hot enough to change the strips color.

Those strips indicate temperature for sterilization has been met but not that sterilization is complete
