I haven't had time to clean up some of my old Pasty plates and the stuff is trying to crawl out the top in this one. How far will it go?

I suppose there could have been minuscule amounts of nutrition left behind that had been dissolved in the condensation, but the condensation itself was long gone before my myc did any climbing.
IMO, these are some of the coolest mushy pix I have ever seen, thanks!

holy jesus! what cool pictures such an ambitious myc
I would expect most cases involve tiny amounts of nutrients on the walls, as inocuole said, whether it is from condensation , tilting the plate before the agar sets, or something too small for us to see
also, bear in mind that the rhizo growth "looking for nutrients/substrate" is supported by the established parts of the myc, since it collects and assembles the building blocks for new myc as it breaks down the already colonized substrate. So it could potentially grow across a fair amount of area without nutrients in search of more substrate (or a place to fruit as in inocuoles pics!!!)
personally, I am fascinated by this, and the relationships between different strains as they interact to network nutrients for expansion, and how the development process is prioritized across and between cohabiting strainsQuote:

wow, that is incredible!! are those isolates? gotta love violent aggression in a mycelium

how cool
mad, what do you think draws it up there? seeking nutrients, moisture, FAE, etc?

It has turned out to be fun to let these plates grow out. There may have been some nutrition on the side of the one above but I'm not convinced. All plates were carefully treated alike and only this one reached for the top. I wonder if it is seeking air/oxygen. A few have climbed a little but not like this one. Some at the same age barely stick up above the agar.
Then, there are a few plates that have completely eaten the food coloring and turned the agar yellowish, a couple are still as bright green as when made, while others have eaten the coloring on just one side/area.
And there are all kinds of variations of texture from extremely rhizomorphic to uniformly tomentose and various mixtures.
Obviously a lot of genetic variation is being expressed!

There's a picture of an empty grain jar on here somewhere that looks like spiderweb or lightning on the inside after the mycelium left on the few grains stuck inside the jar went looking for new food
